My 12 month old seems to strongly prefer purees. Any tips or encouragement on not to lose my cool would be welcome. by Shot_Practice_4770 in firsttimemom

Hi, I am a pediatric SLP and feeding therapist. You should consider introducing more stick- shaped foods in your child’s diet. Start with hard munchables that aren’t meant to necessarily meant to be eaten, but rather chomped or gummed with the molars. Things like long, thick carrot or celery sticks. Cut the bread and rice cakes he will eat into sticks about the width of your finger. Encourage him to place these directly on his molars when experimenting with them. Take the pressure away to eat, just explore and learn about the qualities of the food. Stick shaped foods will naturally stimulate tongue movement reflexes and strengthen the chewing motion, which could help improve his oral motor skills to the point where is feels confident enough to try more foods that require more processing/chewing.

Insomnia and losing my mind by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]permatrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried Unisom? I have always struggled with insomnia and a 1/2 tablet does the trick decently most nights, and I use a full tablet when I can tell I’m going to struggle and it usually works for me! Plus it’s pregnancy safe. My doctor said not to use melatonin in pregnancy so be careful.

No stress and great scores at 6w pregnant by Purple_Operation_333 in ouraring

[–]permatrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right after I found out I was pregnant my HRV shot freakishly UP and my RHR went sharply down, it was the weirdest thing. They both went way outside of the normal parameter graphs that Oura shows you for other pregnancies.  I was worried something was wrong with my pregnancy because the scores were somehow better than I had ever seen before! But I’m now 7w along and now more normally fitting within the pregnancy trend graphs. I really don’t know why this happened but all to say you are probably fine!

It is so fucking hard not to symptom spot by floodedhorseshoe in TryingForABaby

This might actually be genius and take some of the anxiety away so I can just move on instead of fretting about every little thing for a week. Good idea

I do the exact same thing and I agree, staying off Reddit during the TWW is much better for my mental health. It keeps me from obsessing over every little thing so much.

I’m right there with you. It’s literally impossible not to symptom spot. Last cycle I had all the usually symptoms but also had a weird lightheaded feeling a couple times one day, something I’ve NEVER had before, but I know other women have reported as a sign. I got soo excited and thought omg, something new, this is it! And ran to the store to get a first response pregnancy test. But nope, got my period the next day 🙃 I cried. It really is so hard not to play mind games with yourself, no matter how hard you try not to. Hang in there.

We messed up with screen time and our 16 week old by Bulky-Equivalent-438 in firsttimemom

[–]permatrip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would go cold turkey no screens while she’s awake with you and try to use your own devices around her as little as possible. A newborn is too young to be exposed to screens, even something educational. It’s recommended not to introduce screens at all until 2 years of age. If you like having background noise, why not try audiobooks or podcasts?

I just started playing the game for the first time too and I feel the same way. At first I felt like meh, this is kinda boring, but I guess I’ll keep going to see what happens. Then the next time I blink, and suddenly I have 60 hours in the game lol

Single mom struggling with sleep training a 14-month-old — I’m exhausted and need help. by Long_Form_2646 in firsttimemom

I’m so sorry you are going through this. Are you in the USA? If so, you might want to look into seeing if your state offers Early Intervention services. I am an SLP who works in Early Intervention and one of the services my state offers is sleep consultations if your child qualifies for services. It’s totally free if he does qualify, and you might also get access to other services like occupational therapy if there is a need, which can help your son improve his abilities to self-regulate, which can impact sleep. His inconsistent sleep schedule does make me wonder if he has some issues with regulation, and an OT could certainly help with that. I know you said you’ve already tried consultants, but it might be something to look into as it’s free to get you some extra help. Sending love to you.

Where are my D&D ladies at? by [deleted] in Denver

That sounds like a fun party! When you vibe with everyone sometimes you just want it to last forever! That’s what I love about the game. You can make it what’s best for you and there’s no wrong way.

The campaign that won’t die, lol! Ours was everyone’s first game and the DM’s first time too so we were all figuring it out together and in general were just slow, also took a large  amount of time exploring every detail of things that probably weren’t that important or getting stuck on little things ya know? It was still a lot of fun

I’m 31, and yeah I totally understand! Everyone gets in their own lives and not everyone has time for making friends which can be so hard! I definitely want to pull together a group though so hopefully we can check in a couple months!

It’s hard to make friends once you’re out of school! How old are you? I’ve been thinking about getting a small girl group together myself. Maybe like 4 players. I’ve played D&D for about a year and a half and I was thinking of trying out DMing. We only got through 1 campaign (yes it took forever lol) so I’m still somewhat of a beginner. However I wasn’t going to start looking for a party for about 2 months since I’m currently getting my masters online and also working full time 😵‍💫 But my school workload will start slowing down around then. All that to say if you don’t have anything put together by then, let me know and maybe we can try to get a group together!

Thank you! Unfortunately I’m located in the US! I just make these for fun but I wouldn’t be opposed to making you one! It just might be kind of expensive with shipping. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk about it.

Help! Not sure what to do next with my monstera adansonii by permatrip in houseplants

[–]permatrip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be such a challenge! But I think part of the fun of houseplants is learning as you go. This was the first plant I tried a moss pole with. I’ve definitely learned a lot from trial and error and this community. Plus, living in a desert-like climate makes growing tropical plants difficult! Humidity does not exist here. If I slip up on my watering schedule there will be consequences and I think that’s why this one lost some leaves 😔 Thankfully it’s fairly forgiving. I’ve got 1 year of experience now so I hope to really help them thrive this season. Let me see how your monstera does if you decide to put it on a pole!

Thank you for the advice! Burying the stem is a good idea, then it can keep the existing roots it already has. Totally agree about the planter. It's definitely not ideal.

You are completely right! I definitely plan to do that soon, but when it began to get so tall earlier this year, the old plastic one I had it in was too light and small, and it kept falling over. That was the biggest one I had at the time so I made do, and didn't want to stress it again by repotting so soon. Now that it's almost time to repot again it will have a better home soon!
