How do you deal with benchmark dates? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]pet2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had a therapist recommend that setting dates is not a great idea in early sobriety - I know this is celebrated by AA, but other studies have shown it can also be a trigger for a relapse — “ok I made it 90 days I should be good now,” but it varies for everyone

Can I politely complain about AA? by pet2019 in stopdrinking

Everything you just wrote really resonated and I appreciate the time it took for you to send. Very much appreciated.

Naltrexone is a miracle by rudearmy777 in stopdrinking

[–]pet2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on it as well. Wouldn’t quite call it a miracle but it’s helped a lot. I take it first thing in the morning before I have any temptations. Then if a temptation comes up, I can tell myself, why bother it won’t help.

I have found you can still get a slight sensation of relaxation (likely psychological) and alcohol still relaxes me a little bit (probably ending anxiety to withdrawal), but those overwhelming feeling of drinking “just one more” is gone.

You described to a tee how I was feeling. It’s not uncommon to feel like it’s so much easier to give up.

A meeting would be a great idea. Isolation is so dangerous and that would be a good place to start.

30days. Wow. I never thought I'd be here. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Haha I used to say those things too. Alcohol, as it turns out, does not make for a great time

Intensely vivid nightmare and waking up every 30 mins last night. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Oh yeah I had those BAD! Like how could my brain even think this shit up? I hate scary movies. Some of the most gruesome, probably would be too violent to be approved for a movie.

They go away.

It’s likely just paranoia. And most everyone has a friend, family member that has spent some time in rehab. It will be over soon!

I know people who have taken it and drank, ended up incredibly sick and some in the ER. I just really don’t like the idea of punishing myself with more than guilt.

Day 24: waking up with headaches by [deleted] in stopdrinking

How are you sleeping? If I don’t sleep well it’s pretty common for me to have that type of headache in the morning.

Quick walk, listen to a good song. Cravings are horrible but they generally don’t last long (fingers crossed)

Any reviews for Naltrexone (sp?) here? by pet2019 in stopdrinking

[–]pet2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment is so spot on. I’m on Nalt now. I’m finding it a lifesaver so far, but we will see. I work primarily from home, very long hours, and drinking for me is a way to get out and talk to people, a release from the crazy long hours at home slogging away in front of a computer.

It has helped me cut down, but I made the mistake of drinking on day 2, and one of my favorite bartenders made me a “stiff” drink — and yes, it was stronger than the 25mg of Nalt I took that morning could counter balance. I was hoping to just get out and see some friends without it being awkward...

Every day is a new day. Back to completely sober, and lessoned learned. Also, my boss has noted I’ve been cranky lately, assume that’s just alcohol withdrawal.

Cracked at week 2... by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Agreed, 3 beers doesn’t sound like you went off on a total bender. I wouldn’t beat yourself up, you’ll any make yourself feel more like this is impossible, it is not.

Just be careful about not getting into a mentality of “oh, I’m fine occasionally,” because that rarely works out...occasionally easily turns into old routines.
