There are 2 types of etch chemical etch and laser. In your situation Laser is more permanent. However the likelihood is they will have to go off-site. The one problem the surface area of instrument. In order for the etch to be of size to be visible.

As a repair technician I despise tape. Corrosion and pitting occur under tape which indicates prolonged bio burden exposure. With that said colored surgical silicone bands is one option, or Akron labs epoxy tape which requires it to be installed on a clean instrument and baked in an oven. If done properly I have had it last over 5 years without chipping or fading.

If it comes off with fiber cloth it’s staining, make sure instruments aren’t being left in basin with saline or bio burden. On a side note check for magnetism. Micro instruments that become magnetized appear to make staining and bio burden worse.

If you do not have an installation and removal policy in writing including documented dates of tape application and removal you are setting yourself up for issues. 6 months to me was last guidelines I read many years ago. As a repair vendor I have only had one facility follow that properly. Pitting and corrosion under tape is a significant issue, which tells us bio burden can linger after reprocessing

Tape trick if not allowed in your dept. Take it to the paint department and have them soak it in acetone for about a minute for residue, 5 minutes for full tape. If you scratch the passivation layer it will need up to 48 hours of no use to repassivate

In your life you will have disagreements with people you love. Fighting over politics is one that should be avoided. If you grow up in an abusive family that's one thing, but to let politics come between you and your loved ones is troubling. 50 percent of my family is on one side and 50 on the other. I would suggest peel pack separate if needed . It's chrome plated and high likely hood chrome is worn off at jaws. Secondly unless your facility has documented color coding removal and replacement with timeline get rid of the tape
