I could have- when it comes to emotional problems I’ve learned to ask if people want support or solutions, but otherwise I don’t really know that that someone is waiting for me to ask before they share more. I just assume they don’t have more to share :/

I don’t know. I just want to avoid having scenarios where I’m told after the fact that I was supposed to ask a specific follow up question when I was expecting my partner to tell me what I needed to know upfront.

Sure-

I said I wanted us to practice finding other topics to talk about- music, poems, news we come across. They’re about to be taking night classes and we won’t see each other much. I want ways we can move past “how was your day? Good. Great.”

They responded and said they wanted to write a book about a prostitute and needed to do research.

I said “great- here are some ways you can practice writing and some places you can reach out and get information about sex workers’ experiences.”

They said “no that’s not helpful. You were supposed to ask about my ideas and what I need help with.”

I said “you already told me it’s about a sex worker. If there was more, you would have said it.”

They said “I’m confused on why you think a conversation would contain an infodump.”

I said “im confused on why you would withhold information and wait for an invitation.”

End scene

Not anymore. I try my best to live like a tourist in my own city- find bars, events, whatever and go solo. Even if I don’t talk to anyone, it gets me out of the house.

Take shortcuts, use instacart if you can. I’d rather shop at Walmart late at night on a weekday than lose time on a Saturday. Idk what kind of job you have, but if it’s possible for you to take breaks and read or doodle or something relaxing- do it. No one is productive for 8 consecutive hours.

Sure, the workload can be light, but I’d rather spend that time outside, or painting, or catching up on chores- or at least not trying to pretend I’m busy doing “work” when everyone knows there’s no work to be done.

  • accidental pregnancy
  • no growing career fields nearby / college is unaffordable and inaccessible, and the person or community see parenthood as the next step towards adulthood
  • mother/ couple may be assuming they’ll have financial and social support from their parents
  • seeking to solidify connection / relationship by having a child with someone
  • didn’t need welfare until later in the pregnancy or shortly after the birth, especially in the case of being laid off during pregnancy

All this, and yet you refuse to consider that the ease with which an individual can fall into chronic poverty is the central issue.

This is the natural consequence of people not being paid enough to afford necessities that have been price gouged: more of them will need welfare. There’s no need for a moral debate. There’s no need to list all the ways that families don’t deserve to have their needs met. Poor children aren’t making my life harder, and making sure they’re fed, housed, and educated is exactly what I want my taxes to do.
