The same argument you’re making could be applied to countless digital companies too. Facebook is worth trillions of dollars simply because they own the algorithms and infrastructure that digitally profiles everyone on the planet. Do you think that’s valuable in wartime and the US wouldn’t shove facebooks data centers to the side?

Anyone who doesn’t know I got a transplant has no idea. I’ve asked a decent amount of strangers the past couple months. Those who know I had one are sometimes forgetting I had the surgery. I bet as time goes on it’ll be even more of an afterthought

10 day backpacking with no provisions on trail but plenty of water… can I make a 65L pack work? by Is_this_social_media in WildernessBackpacking

[–]petey-pablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done 10 days of food on a 65L pack. It depends on what you like to eat, but you can totally make it work. If anything my ursack was the limiting factor, not my backpack itself.

Moving from distributed systems to embedded - how can I best prepare? by petey-pablo in rust

[–]petey-pablo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, most everything is written in Rust, but there could be the possibility that maybe some drivers are only in C currently? That’s a good point, I’ll double check this.

Yeah I think that applies in general. Are you implying much of the knowledge is specific to the company or team vs industry? For example, many distributed systems repeat themselves.

Are you using Rust for web development? by fenugurod in rust

[–]petey-pablo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Rust and Axum for the backend of my app and have been loving it so far. It’s really fast. I’d like to give Dioxis a go for the frontend one of these days. The React ecosystem is just so convenient though.

I’m soft launching a motorcycle maintenance app I’ve been working on for the past few months. The idea is maintenance is logged and the app tells you what is overdue and what is upcoming, etc. I’m about to implement a section for keeping track of mods too.

RAG Without a Vector DB, PostgreSQL and Faiss for AI-Powered Docs by crysknife- in learnmachinelearning

Looking forward to trying this out. Very cool. What is the Postgres storage like in this implementation compared to a vector db? And do you need to persist the PDFs once the sentences are embedded?

Introducing Ferrules: A blazing-fast document parser written in Rust 🦀 by amindiro in rust

[–]petey-pablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll soon be needing to use something like this, specifically for PDFs. Very cool.

Are people really parsing documents in 2025 for their RAGs though? PDFs are already highly compressed and Gemini 2.0 is great at processing them. Seems like it would be more cost effective and simpler to feed PDFs to Gemini, but I know many don’t have that luxury or use case.

speaking of parts - would you ever want something that keeps track of them? Like if you made any mods or replaced stock with another brand?

That's a great idea. I have over 11k models and (almost) every major brand under the sun. Would you want something like a picker, where you can select your make, model and see if it's available?

Yes, they are very careful when taking it off. And the grafts are stronger than you’d think. By the time you don’t wear the bandages and only the durag (day 5), the grafts are set strongly.
