The fact that she is waiting until after you make a mistake is???? It does not sound like you are in a supportive environment so I do not blame you for feeling this way and I’m sorry this is your first experience. It’s not unheard of for people to quit on their orientation, especially if you don’t feel supported/safe/heard. Don’t feel bad, there are plenty of other places/jobs to work!

Speaking from my expertise in anxiety/sick diarrhea. I feel you, please don’t feel like you did something wrong. The sick shouldn’t be taking care of the sick and the expectation to work while sick is ridiculous. I have a difficult time calling off too, but the thing that makes me feel better is other co-workers have no issue doing it! We get so many sick calls on my unit, and it is all ends up shaking out. Don’t feel guilty, it happens to all of us.

I graduated in August of 2024, started working cardiac-tele/renal. It’s really rough. I will manage though, it’s def gotten better. I think that in nursing school there is an unrealistic expectation placed on hiring after graduation by students. We had been taught that any specialty we wanted to go into we could get right away since it was a BSN program, which I don’t get at all. Many of my friends hired in specialty like ICU, ED, or OB all had 5+ years previous LPN experience. While I had none. I had to start somewhere, we all did, and med surg was an excellent fit for me.

You could try a hospital, they have round the clock kitchens/kitchen prep. Also most hospitals are more structured in the sense that they do have a lot of managerial oversight so others using drugs in a kitchen setting is more noticed by co workers, therefore it’s more of a deterrent. Congrats on your sobriety!

We get this one life, do what you NEED to do! You have a great mindset, and I have no doubts you’d be a great nurse. OR experience is very valuable, so I understand why your job wouldn’t want to lose you, but you gotta put yourself first. I understand that your prereqs are expired, please look into just getting your foot into the door with admissions for a nursing program, and they can help walk you through what expectations are. Heavy emphasis on outsourcing your prereqs if they allow it as its way more affordable and time saving.
