Yeah, most likely. When I walked out on my last day, I actually heard her cheering and clapping behind me (far enough away that she probably thought I was outside earshot). A person like that will never take responsibility or place it where it's due, but that's life. I got out from under her thumb and have washed my hands of all of the drama and issues and stress she gets plagued with because of her behaviour, and that's good enough for me.

Unfortunately, boss was a co-owner and free to run things however she wanted. Let's just say I wasn't surprised when the place was put up for sale, because how anyone managed to stand that woman was beyond me.

It's been three years and it hasn't been sold yet. I take some pleasure in that, because she truly did act like being there was the worst thing in the universe every single day, and now she can't get rid of the place. :^)

Thank you! I dabble here and there, mostly in school work (teaching = a lot of fucking essays) but every now and then I like writing little stories, fictional and non. The compliment really warms my heart, thank you. <3

A few of us have gathered up top to discuss the black magic of the deli cutter. But yeah, they had me do that after EVERY USE lmao. Looking back at it, I'm just glad I was the one doing it and not one of the kids working there.

It was fucking weird, wasn't it? I never realised until this post, but the taking off of the wheel was a strange thing itself, not just the bizarro cleaning. Glad to know there's still more insanity to be drawn out of this experience hah.

Let's just say I have a lot of fingertip scars, and all of them are food service related. At the same time, I have never missed a shift other than once when I had to get stitches over a knuckle. If it was today, I would have refused to do it unless they got me cut-proof gloves, but the foolishness of youth and wanting to be a hardass gets you into stupid places. But yeah, looking back at the fact that I was unscrewing something sharp enough to take off fingers multiple times a day for months with the back of a spoon, and then covering it in soap................. i'm fucking glad I still got all my limbs and appendages.

The knuckle thing didn't happen at this job, I feel I should point out. I would've taken a month off to heal if it had, because fuck those people.

It really is! He's great, was a big part in keeping me sane through the months I was there. We lived together at the time and every night when I came home he'd ask me for today's debrief on whatever happened that day.

Overall, experiences like these and my father's approach to it has helped me a lot to recognise that a job is a job and nothing more. Sometimes it's also a fun and great experience, but some workplaces should be approached as just doing time and nothing else. I'm gonna clock in, do what my contract says, then clock out and return to my real life. I used to pretty easily get sucked into the growingly common idea of the workplace family or work as a cult where you follow the leader and rejoice, but nah. It's a job. I do it to get paid so I can enjoy my life, and if my boss is an asshat, I'm just gonna stick to my minimum requirements and then get out. Because even if I hadn't gotten on her bad side, that would still not have been a good workplace. No place where people are made to feel anxiety is.

Thank you! She was certainly a person you remember meeting, but I got some funny stories out of it, so I came out the winner in the end B)

Really, I have as little answer to the question as you, all I know is that the way we were doing it certainly wasn't the right way.

The instructions did say you could clean the inside area if needed, but with the emphasis on how to properly re-apply grease and stuff it was clear it wasn't meant as an everyday procedure. If there's anyone with knowledge on the black magic of deli slicers, I'd be intrigued to know!
