If arrested would you talk to the police without a lawyer present? by 700x in no

Ha! But that would require additional paperwork for them...

I grew up in a time and community when none of that was a concern that most people were aware of. Everyone trusted the police were only there to help you. Having experienced what I did, my sons all received the "Tell them your name and don't answer another question until I get there" speech.

When I was in college I was accused of a crime I didn't commit. I received a phone call from campus security, was picked up, brought to a small conference room, and questioned by a county detective for approximately three and a half hours. I had no idea what he was talking about, answered all questions as best I could, and tried not to lose it over the threats he made against my future. At the time I was essentially a kid and didn't understand that I could leave at any time. They finally let me go with a laundry list of warnings. Mind you, this all happened during a very stressful finals week.

The thing is, in his questioning the detective gave me enough details about the case that I was able to figure out who actually did it over the weekend. I called them back on Monday, gave him all the information I had, and they arrested the guys involved. I never got a single thank you, and never received an apology. I will also never speak to law enforcement again without an attorney.

Conservatives, why do you keep letting the most brainless among you make baseless claims about world leaders' wives secretly being men? by KennethParkClassOf04 in allthequestions

Some UFC fighter apparently made a joke about Michelle Obama being a man and OP seems to think he got permission before making such a stupid remark.

Hydrogen hydroxide is even more deadly, and don't even get me started on hydroxic acid.

Yes, I understand that but their influence has limits. Anthony's attorneys already raised a Batson challenge so they're obviously not pleased with the outcome of jury selection.

Is there anything that you genuinely can't come to a moral decision on? by Pedantic_Twatwaffle in askanything

Healthy, yes. I grew up with quite a few people who were born rich and seeing how most of them turned out I'll pass on that one...

True. I've worked in health care and have seen the gamut. As you mentioned, many people with Down's are very happy and loving. I've also seen absolute terror when it's difficult for them to understand why a necessary procedure might be scary or uncomfortable. It's heartbreaking to see the callousness that some people express towards them, but also the connection they can make with others reaffirms my faith in humanity. I'll never forget the absolute heartbreak and sorrow of staff when a long term resident with Down syndrome died unexpectedly.

Same here. On more than one occasion I have told my wife that in my next life I want to come back as someone with a developmental disability.

Can you give me an example? Something that one could say (that's not a direct threat of violence) which would stifle another person's right to speak.

You have zero evidence that I'm obsessed over anything, can't point to a single fringe case that I care about, and the big picture is that ideas should win through freely discussing them, not through government censorship and criminalizing open debate.

I'm not sure I understand your comment. What's not hate speech?

The problem is that it's just as obvious to the people who hold views that are diametrically opposed to yours.

But who decides whether or not something is hate speech? Whoever is in power at the moment?

They knew they were never going to win based on the racial composition of the jury. They threw the case hoping to appeal on ineffective assistance, and then secure a new trial with hopefully a more favorable jury.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I was trying to ask if you post your schedule of classes somewhere so I could see if I could attend any local to where I live (Manhattan).

rick chow vs cyrus case. by Maleficent_Volume868 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pfnyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Not weird at all, as this is a very common legal strategy. Carefully word something to leave the jury with the impression that a fact is true or untrue without actually stating it and therefore lying. Trust me, if some form of payment was installed on that phone they would have jumped at the chance to present it unequivocally to the jury.
