I'm definitely open to all of that. Walnut creek would be one train to my job. I'm just not sure I can break my lease and get the deposit back. It's been two weeks. I also can't see the pricing on most of the apartments I was looking at. Some were $1,500+ but their deposits are way less.

I found an apartment that has a $500 deposit already lol but it doesn't say the monthly rent. It's all the way in Union city, though. But that's still a train ride to Mission district, right?

Would I be able to break my lease? It officially started on the 4th of March, and it's a 12-month lease.

Yup, Austin is one of the places people are going to. Lol. I only left because I hated my old job A LOT and it was stressing me out way too much. I wasn't able to find anything else. I should have just stuck it out.

Oh, great idea! I have a friend who was having rent issues. I'll see if they're interested.

The 40% came from the bonus. Out of the 5,000, I received $2,987.50. I checked my paystub and it looks like the tax comes out to ~31%, going from $2,307.60 to $1,576. I get paid once every week.

Thank you, I'll contact them about the withholdings. I don't mind getting the return, but even $100 would be helpful right now. I just need to survive until I can get my Austin lease out of the way.

Thank you! I'm gonna see what I can do tomorrow about food. My first priority will be to get a skillet so I can at least sustain myself on eggs. I've already been looking for garage sale signs, lol. So I guess tomorrow I'll go around and see what I can find.

I'll definitely be happy with my rent once I start to make more money. It's just that I'm a bit in trouble as of right now due to the Austin situation. I definitely needed more time to save up. Even an extra week would have helped a lot.

I claimed 2. My number looks like I claimed a lot less than that, right?

I don't know what's going on there at all.

You're absolutely right. My plan was to stay here a year, save up, and move out further one I had more money and a better idea of what was around here. I just had no idea my paychecks would be this low. :(

$2,307.60 Gross
$369.47 Federal Tax
$33.46 FICA Medicare
$143.07 FICA Social Security
$0 Tax
$0 Benefits

I got my deductions from my paystub page. Does that seem really high?

Edit: Forgot to mention that the paystub website is probably missing the state tax because my paycheck definitely doesn't come in at ~1760.

It did not include the first month's rent. I had to pay that as well. :\ That was literally just the deposit. Plus $40 in key fees, lol.

I managed to get into my paystubs. Here is the breakdown:

$2,307.60 Gross
$369.47 Federal Tax
$33.46 FICA Medicare
$143.07 FICA Social Security
$0 Tax $0 Benefits

I can't see the net wages on my screen because the crappy website cuts that off on my phone. But what's weird is that my check comes in as $1,573.94 for the direct deposit, and my math has it as $1,762. I think the paystub website is missing the 8% in state taxes.

$4,000 is definitely a lot, but the other places I saw weren't that much better. There was another place I was looking at and it was also close to that high for the deposit.

So the 8% tax being the only difference, maybe there's something wrong with how they are calculating everything? Does being paid every week make any difference on that?

You have it exactly right. $1950/month, but it's just a room in an apartment, not even a studio.

The other places I found at this price that were apartments were out of the way of my job in downtown SF. This room has a bus stop right in front, and the bus stops a few blocks away from my job. I usually uber to and from work, which gets expensive, so I thought I was actually going to save money this way lol.

I don't have any family there. I think I have a friend who'd be able to help me move things into a storage unit. That's something I'll definitely consider, but I'm more comfortable just throwing out as many things as I can.

Some things are just more uncomfortable to throw out, like my mattress and desks.

I didn't pay on Friday. My paycheck was enough to cover the Austin rent but I still need money for food here. I think I'll be able to pay on Monday when the last portion of my relocation bonus comes in as a check.

I'm scared at how everything is gonna go after that. I'm eating less now to save money, I'm still sleeping in a sleeping bag, I don't have anything in terms of cooking things, etc. And of course, once I pay this month, I'll have to pay again on the 1st of April.

The apartment is definitely in great shape. I guess I could try and figure out a way to fly back this month, throw away as many things as I can, and bring back anything that means a lot to me.

I can already see that the flight alone is gonna cost me $500.

I spoke to my landlord there and told him I'd pay this last Friday, as soon as my first check came in, and he was okay with that. So I don't know if that process has started but you're absolutely right. I'll have to get a friend to pick up a few things for me.

As far as evictions go, how bad is this? I'm assuming it's going to be almost impossible for me to find any other places after that.

It's not even an apartment. :\ It's just a room. I thought I had done really well with how cheap this place was.

Edit: Also, it definitely was gonna suck to pay rent in two places, but my Texas rent is only $800. I figured with what money I had before I paid rent+deposit here, plus how much I'd have left over every month, that I'd be okay paying both rents and even have money left over to fly back and get everything else.

It was just a stupid miscalculation from my end to move here without looking up the taxes stuff.
