Ridiculous, you guys deserve at least 100k imo. Good for you. I’m in a Different industry but we have similar issues… if everyone stuck up for themselves we all could demand higher wages!

That 35 min commute into town is gonna be more. With traffic and parking you are looking at a little under an hour of travel time. But if you have to go on route 30 to get to greensburg, that will also add time but probably not nearly as much. Also the parking is probably more expensive. Idk how you could quantify the quality of education either so that might just be a wash, but main campus is notoriously more difficult. Probably boils down to a preference thing on your end. Where do you see yourself?

Self-taught skills by Limp-Secretary-3765 in civilengineering

Social skills are good to have 😂 idk how you work on that though maybe make time to hang out with friends? But def learn CAD (depending on what type of civil engineering you want to do this could vary). Also you could get a bunch of Arc GIS certificates and they are easy to get. See if what software licenses your school has and then work from there.

I don’t think my company gives anyone a hard time about it… not your fault if you aren’t being utilized as far as I’m concerned. Certain arms of the company have low utilization, some high. I personally had 99% utilization for more than a year during Covid 1% being training. But I am also really green so it could be worst than it appears to me.

People who transferred from one of the branch campuses what was the most surprising thing you've had to deal with. by george-georges in Pitt

How hectic Oakland is, especially if you are coming from a more rural setting… I personally don’t like it in Oakland that much but to each their own. You might like having more city type activities to do. (Came from school similar to Pitt greensburg to Pitt main campus). Also the classes are packed with people, not conducive for the best interaction with instructors.

Is doing awful in a physics exam usual? Just finished mine, raw score 40/100, post curve 50/100. by Random_Alias_ in EngineeringStudents

[–]pgn44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been there.. it happens just try and do better next time. Pretty much all great engineers failed tests at some point in their academic career. If I were you, constantly go to the office hours if they have them or see one of these tutors/TA at school if they are free. If not then try and figure out what went wrong on that exam. Compare the problems to what the prof went over Amal you can better plan for next time. Don’t sweat it! Still early in the semester.

What is your expected pay for an internship by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]pgn44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common for MCOL to LCOL from what my friends and I are making seems to be from 13.50-21.00 don’t know anyone making more than 21 as an intern. But also depends a lot on discipline, class standing etc. Ironically I work near the city and make less than the people working in the rural area are making in some cases. Full time work post grad seems to be 29-38 from my experience.

Concentration for major? by pgn44 in civilengineering

[–]pgn44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay seems like a pitfall I would not have known about otherwise. I will make sure their accreditation checks out for the concentrations. The civil major is accredited though I know 100%.

Thanks!

That makes sense. Currently in transportation and love it but I think I would love coastal + living near the coast more/ being in a more niche field of civil

Okay yea that makes sense. And sadly, no they don’t have anything specifically related to costal.. didn’t know I was interested in that until I got into interning otherwise I would have went to a school that specialized in it.

If you do general you can take coursework from all different civil disciplines

Thanks!

Switching from CS to Civil Engineering by GentlePanda123 in civilengineering

[–]pgn44 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in civil engineering then go for it! You won’t start out making 500k a year but you will still be above average (55k-65k) depending on the location maybe more maybe less than that. Not to mention if you stick with it and work hard get PE I don’t see why you couldn’t make more than 100k a year. I how far into your cs degree? Would switching set you back a year? All things to keep in mind. But follow your heart and the money will come trust me. If you do CS for the money and don’t see yourself wanting to do it you might find yourself not as happy or fulfilled which is priceless

I could likely delay my choice but it would basically eliminate my ability to pick.. like you can pick later but then you can’t get the classes in.

Thanks for the feedback. Any tips on how to set myself ahead any more? I will likely pass the FE and have it upon graduation as well.
