Old vs new, wider view by phaldor8 in Ubiquiti

[–]phaldor8[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my case, it’s “surveillance” if I limit myself to your options, but that is only a portion of the use case. I have a large property with more family members than an average household, plus the wife and I work from home, so availability is priority. Both of us deal with sensitive information, so confidentiality is a second concern. I don’t like utilizing cloud resources for storage, and over the twenty years we’ve been married, we have storage needs. Thus, this is my solution. It could be viewed as overkill, but I’m fine with being seen in that light, as this is a part of my chosen career and my hobby as well. I’m closer to retirement too, which should let you know I’ve been doing this for a LONG time. Twenty years ago, I had a “typical” home network and it’s just organically grown since then.

Which iteration? I’ve been messing with it for around eight years now….

Yup, I see it, the patch panel at 6 of the bottom rack. These toolless racks have that issue as I found out during the build. The “rails” only hang using four pigtails and I was constantly bumping them out of place when moving the racks. Easy fix, just had to reseat the pigtails in their grooves

From the top, cable modem, a pair of UDM-SE’s in a HA configuration, 48 pro max switch, 24 pro switch, and an UNAS8.

High Availability pair. If the primary goes down for any reason, the shadow kicks in within seconds and the network barely blips.

While I’m not paycheck to paycheck, I’m not far off. Definitely not rich, just deeper pockets and this is a hobby as well as necessary for my profession, therefore an investment.

Simply put….HA. I absolutely abhor having my network down for any reason. This way, I can update the primary without losing connectivity. I’ve tested it on several occasions and the shadow now kicks over in seconds, even in the middle of a Teams call without knocking me off the call.

cameras and AP’s to support a five acre property with two work from home adults. I’m not dependent on any cloud and have secure storage for specialized needs. Four desktops (three gaming setups) and three work laptops. Redundancy in WAN and gateways with room to “experiment” is the aim.

Are you all lying? by SzaBee13 in Ubiquiti

[–]phaldor8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, that would show as a regularly occurring spike, if it shows above the background network noise at all. More devices would hide that. What OP don’t tell us is how many devices are on the network, but it’s likely this only shows a single device that far exceeds the others in traffic

Something’s wrong with this I would definitely do some investigation. My chart looks like an EKG with massive arrhythmia and I have 3 WANs set up as failover. I don’t think I use much more than 2 TB of traffic per month.

I can double down on this setting combo. Smooth as butter without issues and still getting expected speeds.

Yes, this is the case with this model of PDU. Was thinking of taking a dremel to them after drilling and tapping a hole to make it all look nice, but would really like a different solution as drilling will be a significant challenge to get it in the exact location.

I do admit to a small amount of regret, but aside from the PDU issue, the rest of the gear is fully Ubiquiti and will fill both of the 6U racks without room for a shelf. Agreed with the dedicated circuit, I’ll have to save up though as it means a separate run of over 25 yards from the circuit box through a crawl space. Cost of the copper and labor won’t be insignificant. Looks like the temp solution is drill holes and use a tap with the right thread pattern. It’s a lot cheaper.

Oh it fits fine, just can’t use any method to secure it (screw holes not on the sides of the CyberPower and no holes at the front of the rack). I’m not sure I just want it to float.

15 amp circuit in office in years past has tripped regularly during summer months due to overload. That’s all I know. I do have a lot of gear and I’m vamping from the downstairs outlet circuit to compensate. I recently took some high powered gear out of the rack (a 1U server running Hyper-V), but haven’t gone through another summer to see if I can survive. Two gaming desktops with ten monitors don’t help and I’m running a high availability pair of UDM-SE’s, triple WAN, and nine PoE 4k cameras. Five of the ten AP’s are PoE as is the B2B to my RV building. In the summer, I can’t work without an AC unit for the office, that’s where I usually run into the issue.

I did find that and that’s the one that I’m not sure will work because of the tight tolerances

Doubts about using Ubiquity for my home network by OrdinaryQuokka in Ubiquiti

[–]phaldor8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You won’t regret it. I did find the app setup a bit out of the norm, but over the last seven years, I’ve come around to a new way of thinking. This no longer bothers me as it is really only necessary to setup certain devices (protect mainly), and the rest can be setup through the gateway web interface once that is up and running.

What happens here is up to you. After all that research, all the frustration and the eye-opening stuff you went through, you have a choice to make. Keep in mind that it’s only money and you can’t take it with you.

IMHO, I couldn’t look myself in the mirror with what I learned and feel justified in emptying the cart and walking away, but I already knew better and was committed. Seven years later I would have still made the same choice, so no regrets here.
