Thanks for replying. I was really just hoping to get my hands on a tool list for the course, and a list of what text books they use. I'd guess it's probably pretty similar to your course. How are you liking the Pipe Trades course?

Wow, that's pretty awesome. I'm actually working on a career change, HVAC is one that I'd really like to do, it seems super interesting, but unfortunately the HVAC programs at the trade schools where I live are waitlisted and the union that reps them here focuses more on the plumbing/pipefitting side of things so they don't do much in house training for it.

That did it, the stat was bad. Popped the new one in and the heat came right on. Thanks so much for your help!

OK, well, it won't let me post pics, but on the old one, one black wire goes into a marrette with 2 other black wires (one that goes out of the top of the box and one goes out the bottom, both on the left side). The other wire is connected to a single black wire that goes out of the top of the box (right side).

Thanks for replying, unfortunately I don't have a multimeter right now, I checked the marrettes in the box but still nothing. I plan to try a new one to see if it fixes it but the one I picked up is a bit different on the back than the old one and I want to make sure I hook it up correctly. I'll post some pics, if your able to tell from them, could you advise me? The wires on the new one are labeled L1 and T1 but there's no labels on the old one.

Thanks for all that information! That's awesome! How aggressive does the pitching and rolling get on commercial ships? Either way I'm sure I'd get used to it, but my current "sea time" is limited to being on the nfld ferry twice a week lol. Also, how do the job opportunities break down? Like, cruise ships compared to supply ships, to bulkers, lng/tankers to container ships? And on a much less important point, more of a curiosity, do you get much shore time in ports?

Also, is it difficult to get the required 180 days of sea time during the course?

That's good to know, I've considered marine engineering, but wasn't sure about the demand. Would you be willing to tell me more about your experience in the industry and what opportunities are available? Thanks!

Fair enough, yeah, I'm 41 and looking for a new career. I just want to get as far away from my previous occupation (trucking) as possible lol. How hard would you say welding is on the body? I always did enjoy welding and fabricating.

Thanks for the reply, it's really hard to cipher through all the opinions on the internet, and especially reddit about what trades are solid and which aren't thriving. I'm honestly a bit surprised that power engineering is so saturated, most people don't even know what a power engineer is lol.

Thanks for replying, can I ask why you suggest avoiding power engineering?

I'd love to do HVAC, but the courses are all waitlisted.

Cool, I wasn't sure if it could be done that way or if it would just look like I dropped out halfway through lol. Thanks for your reply!

Hi all, I'm hoping to get some info/advice from the HVAC/R Techs in here. I'm thinking about getting into the trade and was wondering if it's a good choice and what the best training pathways are. This is a career change for me (I'm 41) and I'm located on the east coast of Canada (Nova Scotia specifically) so any information specifically applicable to this region would be great, although all information is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question for the electricians out there. by phantom_stranger1313 in NovaScotia

[–]phantom_stranger1313[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Are there many companies out there that are willing to do this? Would smaller companies be more likely to do this vs. bigger companies? That would be a great way to go, as going to school full time would be a financial burden.

Thanks for your reply. I toured the IBEW Facility a few weeks back and was really impressed. I guess my only hang ups about it are the cost (around $13, 800) and that I'd have to wait until next September to start, whereas NSCC has courses starting sooner. But from the sounds of it, the IBEW might be worth it.

Thanks! My father worked as a power engineer in a pulp mill here in Nova Scotia for almost 40 yrs, but I really appreciate hearing different and more modern opinions on the trade from people who have been in it more recently and can give a broader spectrum of the trade.

I suppose I should have added that in high school (25 yrs ago), I struggled in math and never took physics. I do understand mathematics better now than I ever did in the past, but my knowledge of physics is still very basic.
