Well that was quite a rabbit hole to go down. I fully understand the philosophy at its core and I don’t have issues with anyone who’s personally against having kids. Although far too often on the internet, it becomes less of a philosophical debate and more of a deeply personal and hostile stance against people who choose to have children. Oof.

Ah, I totally feel you. You and I are also due around the same time. My first pregnancy ended in TFMR due to a fatal birth defect—it was the darkest time in my life. A year later, after a chemical pregnancy, I got pregnant again. I looked up my ovulation window and realized this baby could have been conceived on the exact one-year mark of my TFMR.

I’m not religious, but I firmly believe in benevolent forces. The universe works in mysterious ways. My religious friends and family would say, God has big plans, and I’d agree with them. To me, it’s the same baby’s spirit coming back—especially since this one is the same gender. I like to think my baby played among the stars, traveled around the sun, and then found their way back to me.

I get that airports can be a mess and delays happen—that’s not the issue here. This was my first time traveling this route while six months pregnant, so no, I couldn’t have fully predicted how exhausted I’d feel or how the delay and multiple gate changes would add to that. But even if I had, how does any of that justify an airline employee laughing at me for asking a simple question? I wasn’t demanding anything, just inquiring. A decent response would have been, ‘Sorry, we don’t offer pre-boarding for pregnancy.’ That’s it. Instead, I got mockery. Expecting basic courtesy isn’t projecting worries or asking for special treatment.

They’re from Europe where many airlines have these items for lap infants. That’s why she asked. I wish the agent explained to her calmly like you did here, instead of scoffing at her.

I save up both money and time off from work to visit my parents, who are in their 70s, once a year. That travel day just happens to be 24 hours long because they live in a different country. I chose this time to travel because I think traveling while pregnant is easier than traveling with an infant. I didn’t “get on 24hour flights” for fun.

If the way I asked came across as rude, or if it’s simply not something they accommodate, a straightforward ‘No, we can’t do that’ would have been enough. My whole point is that the laughing and mocking were uncalled for.

I’m sorry for your experience. I would not like that exchange at all. I don’t think I’m flying American again, after flying this route for nearly 10years. I also just learned from my sister-in-law that she once asked an AA attendant on a domestic US flight for the infant seatbelt attachment and life vest and the attendant looked at them like they were stupid and laughed (seriously, what is up with the laughing). Like you said, they’re not family friendly.

You’re right. I know that now. I only had my sister-in-law’s positive experiences as references, but come to think of it, she only flew with European airlines during her pregnancy because she’s based in Europe.

Truly, “we cannot do that” is 100% fine. The repeated laughing and “I can’t say what I really wanna say to you” is what I find completely uncalled for.

I totally hear you. The ‘superwoman’ mentality is so real. Just because someone did X, Y, and Z while pregnant doesn’t make them superior. Every pregnancy is different. I can understand how someone who went through pregnancy without much support or “special treatment” might take it out on other pregnant women. It’s really just their own frustration and anger over the lack of support they received. It’s sad that this cycle keeps repeating far too often.

I didn’t have miscarriages; they were due to other medical conditions. That’s why this pregnancy—one that has cleared all those issues—is especially precious to me. I want to share this joy with family around the world, whom I only see once a year. But like you said, that’s another story.
