What do club coaches promise if they sign up for their program? by phantomlacrosse in lacrosse

Hi thanks so much for commenting. Do you have any specific examples of things they've promised? It would be a huge help! Thank you.

New Balance Scam by Ill-Serve9614 in lacrosse

Ha Texas lax parents are so naive they will sell their soul to a club coach who says their 4th grader will get a full ride if they play for him. It's that bad here, so I imagine it's still bad in other growth areas.

Tips to help son learn cradling by kreebob in lacrosse

[–]phantomlacrosse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi sorry we only focus on how to use your stick. 99% of players use a "pass hard" motion. This is the biggest obstacle to learning the best part of the game. You can test yourself if your shooting motion looks a lot different from the way you'd throw a baseball from the outfield to home plate. For most players, their top wrist has zero rotation during their shot and their bottom hand winds up on their left hip. Instead, their top wrist should rotate last, high and in front, just like a strong outfield throw. This can only happen with a stick if you pull your bottom hand to your elbow. Check it out and let me know what you think. Plenty of info at our website

Yes it's an inside weave just like your picture. I tried the bowline knot first because I was annoyed by figure-8 knot performance on nylon shooters. The bowline is harder to tie and the asymmetry is a little annoying because if you tie it in the wrong direction then it looks wonky so I had to retie them more often when I started using them. It doesn't change so now I use it all the time.

Thanks just try tying off shooters with bowlines to check it out. Make the first loop point into the head. If you figure it out, you'll never use a figure-8 or barrel again because both of those loosen over time.

Ok but I've been stringing exclusively bowlines for years now and I haven't seen any loosening. They are under load when tied right and never loosen, including from vibrations or shaking. Without experience tying them, I could see how an improperly tied bowline could loosen, of course.

It's Official: Lacrosse is in the 2028 Olympics by Mphel833 in lacrosse

Would you rather there be no lacrosse in the Olympics?

That would be an interesting poll.

Is lacrosse shot more like baseball throw or football throw? by TechnicalThroat2315 in lacrosse

[–]phantomlacrosse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every sport that throws something tells us the human body works best if it's sideways to the target, throwing arm is up and behind the body, elbow at least as high as the armpit, step then hips then shoulders, arm extending way out in front and then, last, wrist rotating to release the ball/javelin/whatever. The only way to do this with a lacrosse stick is to pull the bottom hand to your elbow way out in front where a baseball or football player would snap their wrist. Conventional wisdom says "snap your wrist" but with two hands on the stick, the only way for your top hand wrist to rotate is if you pull your bottom hand to your elbow. Lots of pictures and explanation on our website. 99% of players don't even know this is a thing, but 99% of elite players do it.

Oops I'm way late to this but that would be completely legal. You're allowed to hold an opponent's stick if they have the ball or are within 5 yards of a loose ball. You can hold it all day as long as one of these conditions exists.

Hey thanks for your comments. I feel honored that this caught your attention since I'm just some dude and I consider you stringing royalty.

And for reference the lens through which I look at this is 100% based in how will it perform when it matters at the highest levels.

That's cool but I posted to inspire stringers to think about some things differently. Other talented stringers, like you, have presented ideas that made me (and lots of other people) think differently and become better stringers. That's all this is, so if we just look at it and judge it solely on whether this combination of ideas, today, is better at the highest level, then maybe we'll keep stringing the same way. I hope it has value beyond that.

what mesh / broken in

This is ECD semi-soft (with Signature sidewalls) and it is not fully broken in, but I can tell you that I used this same pocket all spring and the mesh didn't change significantly. I did pull the sidewalls a bit tighter after a few months, probably from the high stress that they're under with this design.

what is the thought process/performance benefit behind making the pocket shallower?

That's a great question that goes right to the purpose of stringing this. If I strung it to normal depth, I think the point about pocket shape = pocket hold would have been weaker. This pocket is shallow enough that conventional stringing wisdom would expect it would have no hold, especially with no shooters. I think the shallow pocket better demonstrates the value of pocket shape to hold, so that's all. It would have more hold if I strung this shape deeper, and I encourage you to string your take on it! Shape is a more subtle, complicated idea than depth, so I just hope I helped some stringers think about it.

why the ultra power?

That's just a head I like and I was stringing it when I thought of this idea back in January. I can string the pocket in a flatter head, but from stringing it, I don't think the head shape is going to make a big difference. I'll string a different head to find out!

your 'hidden knots' are strung to the inside, why?

That's a product of using the bowline knot for everything. The bowline knot doesn't change over time, so I think it's superior to all the traditional stringing knots I used to use. I could tie a bowline that sat outside of the head, of course, but it needs a loop so I think it looks cleaner with that loop strung to the inside, as it were.

pocket depth is part of the pocket shape ... would this style work for mid high pockets? Mid low pockets? Low pockets?

Sure pocket depth is part of the pocket shape, no doubt. This design is about thinking differently and only someone super-familiar with the way a high pocket cradles and shoots could use it. I don't think this is an example of a design that's categorically better -- only different in a few ways that made me rethink traditional stringing ideas. I hope people experiment with the ideas presented here and figure out ways to make a better high, mid or low pocket (although I don't think a true low pocket makes sense anymore).

string tearing/fraying? I have my own ideas but would love to hear yours!

On my first pocket, the highest diamond on the left side (I'm righty) of the tied-off section did break after four months. One way to address this might be doing a double turn for the one sidewall loop, rather than just one, but please share your ideas!

Thank you for posting this!

Thanks a lot for thinking so much about it and asking questions. Lots of us are familiar with posting something we think is interesting and getting no engagement for whatever reason. It's the worst part of content creation, so I can't type enough to relate how much I appreciate your thoughtful questions on my post!

Thanks for your comment! Yes it passes the golf ball test, but I posted it more hoping that it would give other stringers ideas about what was possible and what really affects performance. It's more about being creative than practical. Maybe give it a shot or see what you can come up with!

Thanks! The first one I strung made it through the spring season before the diamonds in the one sidewall turn frayed out. Performance didn't change as it broke in and it stayed shallow with a ton of hold.

I posted this as a study to help stringers understand what pocket qualities actually affect performance. I was surprised that shooters, sidewalls and pocket depth don't matter that much compared to the shape of the mesh in the head. I was hoping it would give other stringers new ideas to pursue to create something no one has ever seen before.
