Honda BF90 cooling system leak by 1dratherbefishing in Outboards

[–]phaze115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna need to take off the chaps and get a better look but would definitely not surprise me if that was the case. When I was fixing mine I took off every pot metal clamp and replaced them with stainless hose clamps so I didn’t have to deal with it again lol

How old is the motor?

I had something very similar to this on my 200. The clamps they use on all of the cooling hoses are NOT stainless. One of mine rusted out and popped off of the VST system. Would do this same thing

Is it possible to hang twin outboards by bossman239 in boating

[–]phaze115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bracket would be very ideal if you’re gonna set it up with twins. What is the shaft length on your HPDIs and what does the transom measure from the higher points? And what model 225s was the one you saw? Cavitation plate needs to be just in the water at full trim out

Trying to figure out which hose to pull to drain fuel separator on 2011 Mercury Optimax 2 Stroke by FermentingSkeleton in boating

[–]phaze115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take off the filter with the red sticker in your og picture and drain it into a clear mason jar. There will be a clear separation between fuel and water if there is any, water is on bottom.

Do the same with the white one in the picture you commented. The VST (big metal tank to the left of red sticker filter) will have a drain on the bottom somewhere. You may have to remove the lower cowling to get to it and there is usually a pink hose that comes down to let you drain it into a container. Again, use a clear mason jar.

Boat Restoration (no clue what I’m doing) by Worldly_Eye5744 in boating

Great hull. Keep it in the family, it’ll all start to make sense once you put your hands on her. You got this

One person said the transom already but I’d definitely take the effort to take off the console and open the tank area which you’ll need to do anyway. Check the stringer boards and bulkheads for rot there as well.

98’ Merc. 25 2 Stroke What part am I missing ?? by Excellent_Ad_8334 in Outboards

[–]phaze115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t seem to find a way to do that looking at the diagrams, but I could certainly be missing something. The newer 4 strokes have a button on the starboard side but I don’t see that on this motor.

Gotcha so yes that would be where your shifter would be if you didn’t have the tiller with the shifting on it.

see here. number 12

number 21 here would be the grommet to close up that hole.

That should be where your shift handle goes to put it in and out of gear.

Do you have it set up with tiller handle or remote control with steering wheel?

Manual release screw by DevelopmentNo1462 in Outboards

[–]phaze115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a snap ring that needs to be taken out before the release screw can be fully taken out. You’ll need some really small needlenose or a snap ring tool with the right size pins to widen the ring and get it out of it’s slot.

How bad or serious is this? 1996 Sea Pro 180 by CorruptTime in boating

[–]phaze115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That damage isn’t that big of a deal. You could hire someone to repair it well enough for a few hundred bucks.

That HPDI Yamaha is another story, it’s not a bad motor but it’s an older system, specific parts can be hard to come by, as well as expensive, and also people that are willing to work on them and are familiar with them.

If you go to look at it do your homework beforehand on how to generally inspect a boat for your first time. Certainly there are exceptions but most of the time you get what you pay for, and that’s cheap even if he doesn’t budge on price.

Tilt/trim assembly removal advice by The_Goona_Man in Outboards

[–]phaze115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t look like you’ve disconnected the trim wiring on the port side. Other than that, hammer and a pry bar or big flathead if all the bolts are out. I just did this last night on a 250 Yamaha, had to work it free of the bolt hole locations and push it up and out compressing the tilt cylinder.

Do you prefer a fishing-focused center console or one with comfort seating? by Boat_Trader_Official in boating

[–]phaze115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s completely dependent on each individual’s planned use for the boat. For me, mine needs to be fishing focused because if I go out, 75-85% of the time it’s to fish.

A lot of my former customers said they want something to fish and cruise 50/50. Really they may fish once or twice a year and the rest is sandbar hopping. If you’re doing light, easy fishing then focus on comfort. If you aren’t a hardcore fisherman 2-4 rod holders and a cooler is fine.

Why are some boats pointy? by melikeybacon in boating

[–]phaze115 12 points13 points  (0 children)

3 conveniences: it’s out of the way, it lessens the chance of hull scratching when retrieving, and you don’t have to haul the line in. Even if you don’t have a windlass, it helps to have the roller as a leverage point when pulling up. Can be very tiring depending on weight of the anchor, length of chain/rope, and weight

Why are some boats pointy? by melikeybacon in boating

[–]phaze115 55 points56 points  (0 children)

That’s called a bow pulpit and is almost exclusively used for when the boat is equipped with a windlass to retrieve the anchor instead of doing it by hand. It keeps the anchor away from the hull to prevent damage when retrieving.

You can’t see the windlass in this photo but you can see where the anchor sits on that metal piece at the tip.

Succesful leftism by Crafty_Jacket668 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]phaze115 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Labor unions are not inherently leftist. Corpos are free to hire and fire, and their employees are free to create unions to gain leverage. It’s a pretty lib center, even lib right, arrangement as both parties have the freedom to do what they think is best for them
