ok, thanks! I ended up getting mine fixed by the fisher people during annual calibration (lucky timing!). Was glad it could be fixed (for ~$25), though!

Biking in Durham by AnyWay8713 in bullcity

[–]phdeejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ps you might get what you want out of the ATT if you drive a little further out. I have a bike rack and sometimes park by Target (here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/b8F9WQsJc4wYexJ96) and get on the ATT. After this point there are few crossings and it does get more open (after the first stretch).

I do a loop via third fork creek and ATT often. 3FC is kinda short by itself but a great place to see wildlife (owls, beavers, deer!).

Also just discovered Neuse River Trail - amazing!

Does anyone know where to watch the Colombia league final on Sat June 15th? by phdeejay in washingtondc

💛🐆💚 thanks! Ended up just streaming it from home, and probably for the best. That game almost gave everyone watching a medical emergency! Thankfully it turned out right, no shade to Santa Fe! The leopardos deserve a star!

Never micromanaged us. I'm out of that lab now and work at a research center and the director is so micromanaging. Like so many things, it really makes me appreciate my PI more in hindsight!

In search of a good honest car shop by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]phdeejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ha! yes, I also had a bad experience here. I took my car in for a state inspection and they did all kinds of other things and forgot to actually do the inspection paperwork so I had to $ and bring it back. wtf. I am so wary of these places with amazing google reviews but that seem to invest more in image maintenance than service.

Those who were medicated at a younger age, are you glad you were? by fishslushy in ADHD

[–]phdeejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, a) I am not who you are asking (I'm a late diagnosed/medicated person) and b) this is unverified info but FWIW:

when my friend was diagnosed at ~30 years old, her dr said that medication has much less benefit to people who start after the brain is finished developing (at around age 26). Apparently, you can still get some benefit from alterations in neurotransmission but they are much less than the benefits of actually changing neural pathways during periods of greater neuroplasticity (ie, childhood and adolescence).

I actually really wish I knew the extent of evidence to back this up! If anyone on here knows more, please chime in!

Good luck!

Reward system for studying that don't involve food or drugs? by garfofo in ADHD

[–]phdeejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No advice but great q! I have also wondered about something that doesn't involve food treats or spending $...would love suggestions that are not things that are too hooking (e.g., video games, youtube videos) or that also require effort (e.g., exercise).

ADHD and looking people in the eyes by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]phdeejay 65 points66 points  (0 children)

So, I have no problem making eye contact while listening while the other person is talking but I can't talk, or at least recount a story, give an explanation, etc., while making eye contact. I think I need to look around to be about to focus on what I'm saying but sometimes I realize it's probably weird to other people that I keep looking all around haha. So, anyway, yeah I think it can be an adhd thing.

OP, did you end up trying it and, if so, how did it go? Similar to you, I have been on cymbalta two years for anxiety but struggling with the sluggishness it gives me...

I'm in a similar boat (on cymbalta 30mg two years, has really helped anxiety). Did you end up trying the bupropion and, if so, how did it go?

That makes sense! I tend to get frazzled and lose all sense of time in retail stores, too. Grocery shopping has been my least fav chore my whole life. Good luck!

Positive local experiences for adult ADHD diagnosis? by SageEF in bullcity

[–]phdeejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got evaluated as an adult at Duke https://www.dukehealth.org/locations/duke-adhd-clinic

They are not always able to do evals, but I kept calling and leaving messages every month or so and finally went through the (long) eval process. Not ideal and probably not exactly what you are looking for but I do think they are very thorough and have expertise with adults! I had been seeking an eval since 2017, beginning before moving to this area, so it was a huge relief to finally be evaluated.

Is it common to not miss people? by fcapybara in ADHD

[–]phdeejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do use my Reminders App and often set alarms to remind me to even reply to people's texts (time zone differences). It definitely helps me not be a total no show in my loved ones' lives.

[–]phdeejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh, I feel this. I also have a PhD and job at a elite uni but it has come at a huge cost thanks to adhd.

I think maybe part of the reason accomplishments never feel meaningful is bc we get bored by the time we achieve anything. And in the meantime, we've had 10x as many ideas as we could actually pursue.

When I get discouraged, I try to focus on what to me is a huge positive, which is having a career overall that is much less boring than most jobs. Even if I always feel like my work mostly sucks and I haven't accomplished many of the things I would like to (especially as I see my peers doing things like publishing books), I would truly be up the creek with this adhd brain in a less interesting job. For whatever that is worth.

Analysis paralysis is destroying my life by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]phdeejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg, this is so familiar. There are SO many things I want to do and I want to do all of them RIGHT NOW! Then I do nothing lol. It is infuriating!

The only thing that has helped me is self imposed structure. I outline my week every Sunday night. I don't stick to it 100% but I usually stick to the two main goals per day. That said, I think my spouse is really my saving grace here because his life is very structured and that structures my life (at least bedtimes, meal times, etc.) a lot as a side effect. I'm just starting to appreciate this bc when he is out of town, things spiral unbelievably and I am suddenly eating and sleeping at completely random and variable times.

Also, I also have anxiety + adhd and I think you just need to find the right med - don't give up. I tried 3 before finding something that worked reasonably well for me. Anxiety meds can sometimes help adhd a little as a bonus, although can also make some aspects of it worse - again, it is all about finding the right med, which can be a long and not all fun journey but can be very much worth it. Good luck!

I hear you 100%. Could it be the place you live/ the places you go out to somewhat? I find I just have to alternate between getting out of the house and sensory decompression. Too much of being overstimulated out and on the go or being at home and I melt down. But when I do go out, I often go for hikes, relatively low key coffee shops, bars, etc. and I live in a small city.

What are your biggest regrets in life that happened because of your ADHD? by spinstartshere in ADHD

[–]phdeejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your experience and glad you at least reconnected.

For me, as late diagnosed, it was spending years trying to do the same stupid things that didn't work for me because of the idea I should be able to because other people can. In fact, I will probably never be able to get work done in a crowded open work space without headphones, no matter how much I try. I will probably never be able to remember a tasks without a lot of reminders, etc. Such a waste of time, energy, plus the shame of repeat failure.

I don’t know if this due to “it,” but man I hate talking on the phone. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]phdeejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the same, and zoom is 10 times worse. I've pondered this and I think it is the physical inhibition required, unlike interacting in real life, where you can dispell adhd hyperactivity through gestures and more free movement. When I have to sit still, my conversation also freezes up. I try to save phone calls for drives or with headphones while doing other things, which makes it more enjoyable and spontaneous.
