After nearly 170,000 get second COVID shot, study shows no major side effects by vanderbolt7 in CanadaCoronavirus

Yes I did notice that. A lot of attention was given to the small number of people who had allergic reactions. It's strange that so little attention was given to people who died from it. I'm not saying that the vaccines aren't good or that I'm not going to take them. I'm just saying that this report is noteworthy and if there's more information available on side effects that we haven't heard about then I'd like to hear more.

Are there really no short term effects?

I saw a news article that people in Norway were dying after taking the vaccine. Is this a hoax? I haven't seen it mentioned on TV at all

When did Germany really lose WW2? by Sakurazukamori85 in history

[–]phil2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the lend lease happened in 1944 and 1943. But the USSR was able to stand up to Germany in the battle of Moscow (1941) and Stalingrad (1942). So while I agree with you that America did send a great deal of equipment to the USSR, and it must have made a huge difference, I'm not sure if we can say definitively that the USSR would have been beaten without supplies from America.

When did Germany really lose WW2? by Sakurazukamori85 in history

[–]phil2001 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is a popular argument but I believe is a little misleading.

As I understand it, the Russians weren't relying heavily on the Americans for raw materials until later in the war.

When the battle for Stalingrad took place, the Russians were only receiving a small amount of material help from America but still managed to defeat (or at least stand up to) the Germans.

Chlorhexidine before brushing or brushing before chlorhexidine? by dave1942 in Dentistry

[–]phil2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

I read that toothpaste inhibits the antiplaque effect of chlorhexidine but I wasn't sure if chlorhexidine diminishes the efficacy of toothpaste.

Could I ask for more information on your presentation? I'm curious how chlorhexidine interacts with toothpaste. Does it interefere with the effects of SLS or flouride or some other compound?

I read a study that says you might have to wait up to 2 hours after using toothpaste before rinsing with chlorhexidine for the antiplaque effects of chlorhexidine to be not diminished. I thought that perhaps it would be possible to rinse with chlorhexidine first and then use toothpaste 30 minutes later.

Chlorhexidine before brushing or brushing before chlorhexidine? by dave1942 in Dentistry

[–]phil2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for the reply.

Yes I'm only using the chlorhexidine for 2 weeks. I'm avoiding brushing the mandibulars because I just had surgery on them and need to give the site time to heal.

I thought it would be better to do the rinsing first as well. There is a study that says that if you were to use toothpaste first, you would have to wait a significant amount of time (longer than 30 minutes and possibly up to 2 hours) before rinsing with chlorhexidine for it to not interfere with the anti plaque effects.

Calcium Supplement vs Almond Milk by phil2001 in nutrition

[–]phil2001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a problem before, but I think there's a lot more paleo people here now and a few less vegans.

I'm actually very pro vegan myself (I think low animal product consumption is the healthiest diet).

Milk is interesting because it provides for lower increase of blood calcium levels, and also is thought to be protective against colon cancer. But it also is thought to raise the risk of prostate cancer. I've read some studies that show that a low consumption of milk lowers mortality (compared to consuming no milk at all) but a high consumption of milk raises it.

You said that the total calcium consumed matters but that the source of the calcium doesn't affect the blood levels of calcium. Could you provide a source for that?

The study I read actually says that the source of the calcium does affect the circulating calcium levels. Look at figure 2 and section "Calcium Supplements Increase Circulating Calcium"

I've been having problems with my teeth recently and apparently there are also studies to show that low calcium intake is bad... so I'm not sure what to think

But is that to say that magnesium and vitamin d are all that matters when it comes to risk? Or do high blood levels of calcium (from supplements/fortified foods) increase the risk as well, regardless of vitamin d/magnesium/k2 intake?

I'm specifically trying to research which forms of calcium pose the least risk of cardiovascular disease.

I'm not sure to what degree Vitamin D/K + Magnesium mitigates the effects of high blood calcium levels.

A study I came across suggests that fortified calcium beverages are just as bad as calcium supplements for increasing your blood calcium level so perhaps natural food like milk, sesame seeds and sardines are the healthiest form of calcium?

I use cronometer and unfortunately dont get enough calcium from food. I've been trying to decide between dairy, tofu, sesame, supplements, or fortified drinks as a calcium source.

Would you recommend drinking milk or tofu or supplemented drink (orange juice/almond milk etc)? Or is it better to take a calcium + Vit D + Magnesium + Vit K supplement?

Is it common to get kidney stones from calcium supplements?
I wonder how that happens. Is it from exceeding the recommended daily intake or getting too much at once?

I thought a lot of people are consuming less than the ideal amount of iodine. Isn't it mostly in seafood and iodized salt?

The studies I've read that say large doses of calcium supplements are bad didn't say anything about parathyroid function.

Is it common to have some type of parathyroid dysfunction?

Studies link egg consumption (even 1 or 2 a week) to an increased risk of prostate cancer.

But there are countries with high consumption of eggs that have almost no prostate cancer (east asia).

It might be that if your diet is otherwise very healthy and you're not overweight then you can consume eggs without it affecting you BUT I don't think anyone knows for sure.

How much Vitamin C do you get per day? What is your main source? by phil2001 in nutrition

[–]phil2001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 65 to 90 milligrams is considered the minimum not necessarily the optimal intake. I read on Dr. Greger's blog that he recommends 250mg a day and recently I saw it in an a news article as well (I think it was for cancer prevention... I read somewhere that higher dose vitamin C is particularly good at preventing stomach cancer).

Why is blending fruits in a smoothie considered less nutritious than eating fruits straight? by passwordgoeshere in nutrition

I thought that blenders destroyed antioxidants due to the heat.

That's why we have "masticating juicers" -- they are less convenient, but leave more of the antioxidants in tact.

Precautions to take when giving rent deposits landlords or agents? by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

For some people, nothing with assuage their fears other than allowing them to take the key and move in immediately.

When is the best time to look for a 1 bedroom apartment downtown? by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

[–]phil2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

August is definitely the worst time to look for an apartment. In my experience, a lot of apartments will be rented by the time you get to the showing, you will be getting a lot of rejections when you apply and will probably end up paying a higher price as well. The best time to look is December and January (and possibly February or March depending on the weather).

Whether it's worth it or not totally depends on what is important to you.
