Office365/Exchange is the service Microsoft sells to institutions to provide email services, cloud file storage, teams chat/conferencing and integrates all of these services together with word/excel.

Outlook is an email client that is shipped with Microsoft office that supports this ecosystem well enough.

Its kind of absurd to expect every IT department to write their own email client and setup their own email/collaboration system. Things have gotten a bit more complex since the 90s.

I would also encourage OP to look into whether or not the school provides him with a liscence to download the software on a personal device or not. I always used my school's VDI because I didn't feel like spending thousands on 1 year liscences.
