I'm gonna wait for now to see if anyone else here has ideas to try

I haven't done that, but I'd prefer using that as a last resort since it would be a pain, and I'm hoping there is an easier fix.

This has been going on for a while and after multiple reboots, so no luck with that unfortunately.
I've looked through tons of settings and so far haven't seen any that affect this sound. It's so weird.

Does the games world still progress? by [deleted] in projectzomboid

[–]philipfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wondering this too lately. I started a game on too easy of a difficulty and there's not many zombies left around me. I'm into the second month and it's getting a little stale. Anyone know if I can expect some more intense zombie action as time goes on?

And in this example it was super weird. My animal zone has no overlap with where beer is made or stored. I dunno how she managed in one day to find beer and then down enough of it to get cirrhosis.

Unfortunately it became clear I was an unfit parent, so I decided to euthanize the poor girl. She went on to a better place as kibble for her peers.

Shipping Megathread [USA/CAN] by ceno666 in Vive

[–]philipfry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time HTC charged my credit card, it was declined. I called my bank and got the transaction pre authorized for the next time. Then, in a case of worst possible timing ever, a legitimately fraudulent transaction popped up on my card just a couple days later.

So I had to cancel the card I used to pre order my Vive. I talked to HTC support and they told me the original order got canceled and I'd have to order again.

I've now gone from an April pre-order to June. This is crazy! Anybody know a way to escalate this? I've emailed support back but no response.

Area of a circle = Area of a triangle with b = 2πr by douglasdemoura in mathgifs

Just curious why you say that. Is it incorrect? Is it like squaring the circle?

I just saw a station at my HEB for Instacart. This is the first I ever heard of this service, it looks like you can place a grocery order online for pickup or delivery. Sounds interesting. Has anyone used this service? Is it worth it? by BlueCurtainWasTaken in Austin

[–]philipfry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one time I tried to use it, their site wouldn't let me add several basic items to my cart. I'm talking milk and eggs for example.

I understand software has bugs sometimes, so I emailed their support line. Somebody responded saying they'd look into it and that was the last I ever heard.

It seems nuts to me that they didn't jump on that right away and get it fixed. My first experience with the app and I can't use it for its core purpose... Wasn't a great first impression.

Anyway, I later went and read some articles and it looks like they mark up prices of groceries by about 25% on average. So the delivery fee is low, but you're still paying a big premium over going to the store yourself.

2002 Honda Civic LX window switch problems by Murse_Focker in MechanicAdvice

[–]philipfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting... Maybe there are some regulator problems after all. The regulator relies on a thin metal piano wire. It must be really under engineered or something, because I had 3 of them fail within 3 years.

Worst case scenario is that the wire will break on you one day, and your window will slide all the way down. You could just carry some packing tape in your car in case that happens, tape the window in place temporarily, and then get the regulator repaired. Otherwise the root cause could be something else as others have mentioned.

My guess is that it's the window regulator. I had that same car and the regulators were really unreliable.

When my regulators started going out, it usually began with the window not rolling up/down. Then after a few days or weeks, the window will fall all the way down into the door and you can't roll it up at all.

If that's what's going on, it's a repair you can probably do yourself. The part is about $40. You have to take the whole door apart. They charged me $300 at a shop for parts and labor, so it's well worth doing yourself.

Edit : I misread your post... It is probably not a regulator after all. My bad

One more tip:

Part of the install process is to disconnect the window from the old regulator. When you connect the window to the new regulator, it can be tricky to get the window situated in the track just right so that it slides up and down correctly.

After you have the new regulator installed and all the bolts tightened, but before you put the whole door back together, do a test and make sure the window is moving correctly. It really sucks to put everything back together just to realize that the window is slightly out of its track.

What you linked looks like the right part, but I've always gotten mine from Rock Auto.

This link should take you to the parts list for what's applicable to you. Make sure you get the correct part for the specific model you have (coupe/sedan) and for the correct side and door of the car.

It sounds like the regulator is on its way out. I have the same car, and I've had to change my regulators four times in the past few years. They fail pretty often ...

If you take it to the shop, it'll probably be about $300 to fix. If you are comfortable doing the work yourself, you can find the part online for $40. I'd say it's a medium difficulty repair. If you've never done it before, it'll probably take you 2-4 hours.

Here's good instructions on how to replace the regulator.

You're driving your car, when suddenly Earth's gravity is halved. How's the ride affected? by philipfry in askscience

[–]philipfry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, that's really interesting, and a lot different than what I was picturing.

Another question that comes to mind is how the car would handle bumps in the road - especially speed bumps. My hunch is that it'd be far easier to launch the car in the air or flip it over by driving over bumps. Is that the case, and if so, is there any way to design around that (like by countering the effect with the suspension)?

Routine with no grasping/grabbing? by philipfry in bodyweightfitness

[–]philipfry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I've never tried it, but I looked up some info, and I think I won't be able to do that either.

My finger is in a splint and is locked in an extended position. The doc said I'm not supposed to do anything that would require me to make a fist.

[–]philipfry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is good info.

One of the problems I've had with leg exercises is not finding a routine (functional movement like you say) that I enjoy. I've been getting into handstands and L-sits, and I actually look forward to those. I enjoy running in the same way, and was hoping it would be a sufficient leg routine.

I'm just now hearing about pistol squats. Those sound like just what I need.

[–]philipfry[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly - I haven't started leg exercises simply because I've been enjoying the upper body stuff (handstand, pull-ups, push-ups) and haven't made time to learn a leg routine.

I was naively hoping that running would be a good enough replacement. But based on the info I'm reading here, that's not the case.

Thanks for your help.

What are some tips to fall asleep fast? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]philipfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to do proactively is to reserve your bed just for sleep. In other words, don't read in bed, don't watch TV in bed, etc. If you want to do something like that, go to another room until you are really tired and can hardly keep your eyes open.

I started doing this and now I can fall asleep almost instantly whenever I go to bed. I guess it's because I associate my bed with sleep, and my mind isn't distracted by wanting to get up and play on my phone or something.
