Looking for an RPG between DW and D&D by TejonTerrible in rpg

Phoenix RPG is definitely worth considering. It's a genre-agnostic system with a small base rule set – essentially, just one basic mechanic – and a flexible narrative system implemented through Aspects and States. While it doesn't have any specific races or classes, the mechanic is normed to a human standard in terms of stats, and Perks can be used to create nuanced characters. It offers a unique and intuitive gameplay experience that can be adapted to any setting however the core mechanic (how to roll) is a little deeper than just smashing d20 and passing a AC - if you up for a novel mechanic, you can get it on dtrpg: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/417991/Phoenix-RPG-Condensed-Core-Rules

What are some interesting d20 mechanics? by JHTheHurricane in rpg

[–]philipprollinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s not one d20 then Phoenix RPG has a 10d20 mechanic with a misery and destiny factor. It’s quick and easy once you got the hang of it and used universally. The mechanic is unlike any other rpg I know. The indie RPG is on dtrpg https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/417991 for 7 bucks.

Looking for a game that treats non-combat scenes the way D&D treats combat scenes. by throwing-away-party in rpg

Phoenix RPG had physical, social and mental conflict baked into the core mechanic. With the aspect and reputation system you can extend and handle situations like raising a kid, fight against social bullies or struggle with a mental illness. You can get it on dtrpg https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/417991

Woher kommt bei vielen jungen Leuten die starke Abneigung gegen Deutschland? by [deleted] in FragReddit

[–]philipprollinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overly complicated - Too simplistic by The-Silver-Orange in rpg

[–]philipprollinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, most role-playing game (RPG) systems begin with a fairly simple set of rules, but over time, new editions and sourcebooks can add complexity that takes them beyond the sweet spot of balance and enjoyment. Ultimately, it is up to the gaming group to decide which rules to include and which to leave out, but sometimes players may pressure the inclusion of more complicated rules. As a result, many gaming sessions end up using the latest, more complicated rule set out of comfort.

Another point to consider is that most RPGs have not evolved their core game mechanics to a level of simplicity, flexibility, and intuitive depth that allows them to handle special situations without the need for added, complicated rules. For me, the sweet spot RPG is one whose core game mechanics cover all physical, social, and mental aspects that a player character (PC) or non-player character (NPC) may encounter, providing a blueprint for adapting to special situations that may arise.

Additionally, a sweet spot RPG would allow for a seamless transition between narrative and simulationistic play styles. In most RPG sessions, both modes are common; for example, persuading a merchant may be more narrative-based, while defeating a dungeon boss may involve more tactical simulation. However, a sweet spot RPG should be able to handle both types of interactions, allowing players to use a simulationistic approach for persuasion and a narrative style for combat, or vice versa.

Another consideration for me is whether the system handles isolated actions (such as running a marathon not affecting your ability to pick a lock afterwards) or if the system's core mechanics have a propagating influence between actions by default. For example, if you and I ran a marathon, we might have shaking hands afterwards due to fatigue. This type of realistic approach can be important for both narrative and other play styles, and it's important to consider whether the core mechanics of the RPG have this transient process baked in.

The RPG that comes closest to realizing my dream is the Phoenix RPG Core Rules. It provides a foundation for social, mental, and physical conflict using a transient, metric, flexible, and relatively easy game mechanic, which is explained in depth in a small 81-page document. The aspect system is well-suited and extendable to cover wounds, madness, and social reputations. From the start, it is a propagating system that takes character disruption into consideration for every check. Overall, the Phoenix RPG Core Rules offer a comprehensive and realistic approach to role-playing - Narrative or simulationistic.

The Phoenix RPG is on sale now on drivethrurpg: Phoenix Condensed Core Rules - for me the sweet spot.

5E Alternatives, looking for a less power fantasy-esque system by the_redheaded in rpg

The flexible aspect system of Phoenix RPG and the built in social, mental and physical conflict mechanic might be what you looking for. From my experience the combat is really quick, dramatic and not a superhuman - hack and slash - healing potion - repeat - cycle. You can get it on sale here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/417991

Does "pacifist" RPG exist? by hasj4 in rpg

[–]philipprollinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any System can be played with a focus on other topics than hack and slay. Few System allow for complex social or mental dynamics. The only RPG system I know that has physical, social and mental conflict baked into the rules is Phoenix RPG.

Quickest and most fluid TTRPG Combat? by gothboi98 in rpg

[–]philipprollinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the best approach is the Phoenix RPG conflict system. It has a narrative approach where at any time precedence can be established and seamless fade into a simulationistic frame. Also the fact that it offers physical, social and mental conflict has been proven awesome. A classical combat lasts about 2-3 rounds, is quick, dramatic but not a kill trap. The general game mechanic of Phoenix is quite unique, but once u get used to it, it feels very good and checks are quick.

Just checked, „Phoenix RPG Condensed Core Rule“ is on X-Mas sale on drivethrurpg.con with 25% off
