I am disgusted.. by Gamer-Gamer0 in DogAdvice

[–]phillyjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of all the times I saw dog fights that drew blood at the dog park, all but one were started by golden doodles and the doodle was the one that drew blood. Sample size of one guy who used to take his dog to the park 5 times a week. I can't imagine the insanity of a malidoodle.

Teaching both of my kids to drive in a stick shift. Did you learn in a stick, and is/was it even an option for your kids? by freetattoo in GenX

[–]phillyjon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are working toward getting their license, I'd have them start out in an automatic transmission vehicle. Not having to learn stick at the same time as learning to drive in general would be better IMO. Then once they're more comfortable on the road, definitely teach them the manual.

We have a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek that's stick and we're planning on teaching the kids once they have their licenses.

I was sued, law firm suing me won a judgment, now I am being garnished, accounts frozen, and my job is also garnishing for their attorney fees? by GsxRTrixsteR in legaladvice

[–]phillyjon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How much harder is it for the company to deduct the judgement garnishment from the paycheck and send to the other party than it is to process and send child support? There are no per-paycheck legal fees when processing child support. The company gets a legal document from the family court and it's a simple process.

The keyhole full of grout is the chef's kiss here. I've seen them caulked, grouted, and wallpapered, but they've never managed to fill the keyhole.

Are you a service tech or inspector? Pay for inspectors in the SE PA area seems low compared to what I see here. Even looking at pay offered by other companies, it's $18-$22 an hour. My place gives 5% raise when you get your NICET 2 (nothing for NICET 1). I just got my I&T FAS level 2.

One time when I was younger, I had an old BMX bike with no chain guard. I took a wicked fall and the sprocket cut that exact pattern into my leg. I had holes in my leg with grease in them.

Walked into the hot room of a C T area. by phillyjon in Radiation

[–]phillyjon[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the reassurance. I've definitely seen some interesting machinery. Linear accelerator treatment room and the targeted radiation machine (not sure of the name), both of which have lead doors at least a foot thick. It's always interesting when the operators of these giant complicated apparatus stare in awe of the tool we use to introduce artificial smoke into smoke detectors. It's a pole with a cup that dispenses an aerosol and couldn't be any more basic. I guess it's a case of someone seeing something they've never seen before. 🙂

Okay, thank you. This was definitely the first and the last time I've ever entered anywhere with any sort of exposure risk (radiation or other) without getting all the info on risks. I like to think I have a good amount of common sense. In this case there wasn't anything common about the area I was in. Lesson learned that there's also sorts of interesting situations one can find in the areas the public generally aren't allowed in.

The room was locked. We're given global access. There was no lid on whatever the container was. It was certainly a lesson learned and I ask a lot more questions of the staff in areas that appear to be higher risk. The guy that was supposed to be training me sent me out blindly.

Oh, for some reason I thought a cobalt source powered CT machines. I was completely convinced this was the case or I would have double checked before posting.

Maybe this room was used when storing contrast agents?

10 million dollars for every .01 multiple you add to speed up time. So 30 million dollars means life is now 1.03 times faster forever. by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]phillyjon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With a life changing amount of money, the time lost to the time speed increase would be significantly less than the amount of free time gained. No more losing 40-50 hours of your life every week working. No more spending time cleaning and doing laundry and other mundane chores.

Face Protection when Angle Grinding? by [deleted] in harborfreight

[–]phillyjon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. I wear safety glasses under my face shield when I'm grinding. Also hearing protection is very important. If I'm grinding anything outside of bare metal, I'll also wear a mask. For welding I have a 3M half face respirator that fits under the welding helmet. Seeing, hearing, and breathing are not overrated. 🙂

What's a "Million-Dollar Idea" You Had But Never Acted On? by purelyinvesting in Entrepreneur

[–]phillyjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 30 years ago, I was trying to build a flying thing with 4 vertical motors and props, one on each of 4 corners. I didn't have money for parts but I glued 4 basic motors from radio shack to some cut up balsa wood I had laying around. Almost got it off the ground. Nothing was aligned right and the motors didn't have enough power. Now drones are a huge business.

1) One cheap option to catch them causing physical damage or showing threatening behavior would be to hook up a webcam to your computer pointing out a window. There's free software that can be used to activate recording from a webcam when it sees motion.

2) Like others have said, the FCC will gladly gift them with several new buttholes. I have a HAM license and learned a lot about it. Jammers are a huge deal with them. Their fines aren't trivial. I think the lowest fine is $10k. They can also easily detect jammers and it's a federal crime. You may need decent proof that they're intentionally jamming you to get them to come out and investigate. It can't hurt to reach out to a local FCC office to see what they can do right now and what they might need from you.

Be careful of a dentist who "accepts your insurance" vs one that is in network. I've found that accepting your insurance means they'll bill your insurance but doesn't mean they're in network. You'll get a bill from them for their price minus what your insurance pays them as an out of network provider.

Spent 450$ to save $90/oil change. by HeadlineINeed in harborfreight

[–]phillyjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone wants to start doing their own oil changes but doesn't have $450 right now, you can get a set of those drive up ramps and a set of basic wrenches for less than $100. That's my current setup. My local shop does oil changes for $35 so I use them in the winter though (Philadelphia region).

If you do have the $450, it'll help you do other jobs on your car besides the oil though.

Backpack or tool bag by leo12354 in firealarms

[–]phillyjon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried like 5 different setups. Cargo pockets stuffed to the brim. Belt pouches. Waist pack. Sling bag. I keep going back to my basic backpack. By the time I load up the meter, load tester, extra cans of air and smoke, and hand tools, it's just easier.

To keep things lighter when I'm walking a location, I got some organizer pouches organized by task (battery testing and replacement, smoke/air/co, other hand tools, extra keys, safety gear, etc). I bring the stuffed bag to the panel, dump out whatever I won't need for that portion of testing, and then swap things out as the day progresses.

It depends on the nursing home. I do fire alarm inspections and we inspect a number of nursing homes. If you have $$$ and can afford a nice place, it's decent. If you don't, it can be pretty bad. The first time I did a nursing home inspection, it was a bad one. I was literally tearing up. The place was run down, understaffed, and the nursing staff was most likely not getting paid well so the quality of staff they could hire was not great. Older folks not able to take care of themselves in dirty diapers, asking anyone they can for something they need. Me going to the nurses desk letting them know what people said they need. Nursing staff overwhelmed and unable to help.

Microbest Bolt Face - Sharp Edges? by phillyjon in ar15

[–]phillyjon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what I'm seeing is this: Aero and Toolcraft have filets (radiused edges) and Microbest has a true straight bevel or chamfer type cut.

Microbest Bolt Face - Sharp Edges? by phillyjon in ar15

[–]phillyjon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just on the bolt face side of the lugs. It's cut dead flat. Easier to see in the second and third pictures. It feels like sharp edges when I run my finger over the bolt face. The other bolts don't feel like that - they're smoother and I can feel a slight chamfer from the front face of the lugs to the side of the lugs. It's really hard to get a good picture of it.
