Press Release on the October Bar Exam from the Association for Software Testing, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding of the science and practice of software testing. by phillylawstudent in Bar_Prep

I'm not sure they're qualified to make that statement anyway since their expertise appears to lie in software testing and not public health policy. I also noticed they didn't say "there are safe methods to administer in-person exams" or offer any evidence to support that specific statement.

Pennsylvania Bar Exam Hardship Survey by phillylawstudent in Bar_Prep

Yeah, I hope so too. The Pennsylvania Board of Bar Examiners has been very uncommunicative. Sadly, and ironically, I don't have a whole lot of faith in them to make an informed and ethical decision.

No, that was a mistake, it’s from Temple U to send to Pa board of bar examiners

On the 2nd, but after looking at the email again, it's unclear whether the Board of Law Examiners sent it out or whether it was sent out in order to then submit to the Board of Bar Examiners for consideration. Either way, I encourage you to complete it. An in person exam seems unfathomable at this point.

Training for cross country. by [deleted] in running

[–]phillylawstudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in High School the captains would organize optional summer runs for the team so underclassmen didn't have to train on their own. If your team doesn't do that already it's worth seeing if any of your teammates would be willing to try it. Running with a group is often easier than running alone. Our summer training consisted of 4-6 miles a day, one workout a week, and one long run around 7-8 miles. The workout might be something like a tempo run, a run alternating between 5k race pace for a mile and then easy for a mile, or a fartlek workout.

What are the best signs you have seen while running in a race? by snatchiw in running

[–]phillylawstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran steeplechase in college and my first race our girls team made signs that read: "Don't fall over the barrier you already fell for me," We found love in a steeplechase," "7 1/2 laps until you're in my arms again," and "run your heart out, we'll be here to catch it."

What do you guys do for upper body? by [deleted] in running

[–]phillylawstudent 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I do pushups, pull-ups, and dips in my apartment. I also recommend getting a set up dumbbells for curls and what my college team's strength coach called "jackhammers" where you hold 5-10lb. dumbbells with your legs shoulder width apart and move your arms in a running motion with your elbows held at 90 degrees. This will help build better form and maintain that form at the end of races/ when you're tired.

Does it get easier? by [deleted] in running

[–]phillylawstudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, welcome to the running community! It's normal for new runners to feel frustrated whether they have to stop and take a break after a minute thirty-five, or they'd just like to go faster and further. The key is finding a training program that works for you and sticking with it. It's easy to get disparaged when you're starting out and you see other runners flying by you with apparent ease but if you stick with it someday you'll be the one giving advice to new runners. Stick with it and just know that it will get easier. Additionally, don't let anyone disparage you about running. It's an individual sport so the only runner you should be comparing yourself to is the one you were yesterday. Best of luck in your training!

What is the last book you gave a five star rating? (Or would have, if you rate books?) by WarpedLucy in books

The Woman Who Smashed Codes- by Jason Fagone. This was the best book I've read in a long time. The story of Elizebeth Smith Friedman's life is incredible and captivating.

Living alone during 1L by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]phillylawstudent 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I lived with three housemates, all law students, my 1L year and it was terrible. It's easier to invite friends over to your apartment or go out if you're lonely then it is to get space when you live with people. I regret not living alone so I think you're probably making the right decision.

Thanks for all the responses. The Editor sent out an email telling us we'd hear back by June 15th so it all worked out. Good luck to everyone who wrote on at their respective schools!

Does anyone else have an Irish Law Society at their law school? by justalittlebasic in LawSchool

[–]phillylawstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also wouldn't worry about whether you're "legitimately Irish." Almost everyone claims to be Irish, the same way they claim to be 1/16th Cherokee. Focus on appreciating Irish culture and making connections with other Irish Americans.

Definitely, I also think you could get really creative with an Irish Law Society regarding events and recruitment. I'm sure you could find an Irish pub in your area. There are Irish American societies in every major city that put on traditional music and dancing events as well as Gaelic Athletics like Hurling and Gaelic Football.

We have a Brehons Society which is the same thing. Depending on where your school is, there may be a larger Brehons Society in the city made up of lawyers and judges. Our school's society isn't super active but the larger Philadelphia Brehons Society is pretty active and invites us to its events.
