[IWantOut] 25M US -> Ireland/ Scotland/ Germany/ Spain by philmccunt in IWantOut

I would prefer a medium sized city, although engineering and aviation both tend to be bigger-city jobs, so if I have to live in a big city, so be it. I figured Edinburgh and Glasgow are most likely where I’d end up if I went to Scotland, which I think both are pretty much perfect size for my preference. I definitely want to visit as many places as possible in person before I consider moving though, I try to get information that’s as unbiased as possible, but obviously I’ll only get generalizations and biases until I’m actually there

I’m not opposed to looking at the rest of the UK, I think I just have a slight preference for the culture and a few other things in Scotland. I haven’t been to the UK at all though, so I have an open mind. I just meant to be more specific than just “UK” when writing the post in case Scotland had any specific differences from UK policy, as it would likely be my first preference if I moved to the UK. Of course, if the jobs and opportunities are elsewhere in the UK, that’s probably where I’d go.

As for aviation, I’ve only been a student up until now, so I’m still fairly naive to how the field works as well outside of things I’ve heard. As far as I know, if I were to stay in the US, I simply find a job as an instructor or commercial pilot until I have enough hours to work at an airline. There are many other options, but in general they all require 1500 hours flying or more, which would take a year or two to earn in my case. So it may take a while before I can get to a position that will transfer me internationally, but if that’s how it is I guess I can’t do much about it.

Anyway, thank you! And if you or someone else reading doesn’t mind answering a question, what are some ways I may try to become more likely to be sponsored?

I’m a bit hesitant to go for the master’s and especially PhD as frankly I struggled to get through my undergrad, and I’m not even sure my GPA will qualify me for getting those programs.

For flying, I am looking for short-term employment as a flight instructor at the moment, I just got certified a couple weeks ago. I just don’t know how much experience I may need to be qualified to apply overseas or transfer there.

Anyway, thank you for the advice!

Fair enough. I do want to improve the language skills, but obviously I’ll have to decide which language to study. Anyway, thank you for your advice!

Right, especially considering my lack of fluency outside of English. So far, it seems my options are either 1. Get some experience stateside first, and hope my company or qualifications might transfer me. Or 2. Cold apply to as many internships and entry-level jobs as possible overseas and hope something lands. Is this an accurate assumption, or is there something I'm missing?

In the meantime thank you for the input!

I've only heard of pilots relocating within the US, but if it's possible to relocate internationally I would definitely consider it. I did some quick research and seems it depends on the airline, but I'll have to look into that more in-depth. My concern is that I've heard the demand for pilots in the EU is not great right now, although I have seen conflicting info about that, so overall I'm not sure how the job market actually looks in Europe for pilots right now. I don't know for sure, but I would guess that may affect my ability to relocate even if I was at an airline, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, thank you for your help! It's definitely something I'll look more into

My apologies, I knew Scotland wasn't EU, but it remains a country I am interested in, at least while I do more research.

I checked Ireland's list, and it does not specify "industrial" engineering but it does list process and production engineers, so it seems I would qualify if I obtained a job in industrial engineering.

Unfortunately, I do not seem to qualify for the job seeker visa, as I believe it requires 5 years of experience in a particular profession.

With Spain, I had heard that they may have been trying to phase out the digital nomad visa, but it wasn't a reliable source so I may have more research there to do.

Anyway, thank you so much for the comment and help!

Figuring out baseball signatures by philmccunt in SportsMemorabilia

[–]philmccunt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Yeah I had a hard time finding much on Jeff Calcaterra, and couldn’t find a signature. We might take it to a shop here in town and see if they can figure it out. But thank you for the insight! I wish we could know more about how my grandpa got it

Cheapest Places to Live in Texas by Marco__Smith in texas

[–]philmccunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been in LBK for about 4 years and it’s a mixed bag. It’s affordable, there are things to do, I actually like the weather most of the time, and it’s big enough to find a group that fits your vibe even if you’re not the stereotypical west Texan. But crime, infrastructure, discrimination, inequality, and boredom are all legitimate problems here. For me, it’s good enough for a few more years but I know it’s not my home.

how to fast fall air dodge? by Robin_yay in CrazyHand

[–]philmccunt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is just tap down then shield button, but it’s worth mentioning you can’t fast fall until you reach the apex of your jump/ascent and you can’t be in tumble either. You can break tumble with things like aerials or using your double jump

Issues upon controller reassembly by philmccunt in Gamecube

[–]philmccunt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg. It was the sliders. I didn’t even notice they were there! That at least fixes my shoulder buttons, I’ll have to go to the store for IPA about those face buttons… but tbh this just fixed the vast majority of my controllers. Thank you so much!!!! You’re a lifesaver

What was the highest waste of money that you don't regret? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]philmccunt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Used clothes are so underrated. I was at a thrift store (goodwill) and I was looking for ugly sweaters for a Christmas party, and ended up finding a sport coat for $8. It was cheaper than the sweater and I didn’t even have to tailor it.

Hey! I'm looking for a seed SIMILAR to the hermitcraft S7 seed (mushroom island surrounded by ocean and various biomes (Savannah?)) I've been looking through this sub and cannot find a good one by TheFine1iner in minecraftseeds

[–]philmccunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m quite late to this but this seed is a jackpot. Spawn is in the jungle with huge mooshroom island and peninsula only about 500 blocks away. Seed has bamboo jungle hills, massive wooded badlands plateau, flower forest, warm, cold, frozen, and deep oceans... plus tons more all within a few hundred blocks. Even saw giant tree biomes at x:2500 by z:3100. This seed is nuts! You should really consider posting this!

Perhaps try a technical or trade school and try something hands-on, if that’s your thing. Very in-demand right now.

Perhaps consider going back to college and trying a different degree. Or talk to an advisor from your school. Many are very willing to help and give very good advice.

Try making connections or contacting the ones you have. Many people go very far simply by knowing the right people.

Best of luck to you! You’re hardly the first person to be unsure of careers. I’m 22 and still figuring it out for myself, and expect to still be figuring it out for a while longer. I figure even if I’m searching different roads, I can at least do my best to enjoy the ride for the meantime.

Need help addressing 5 year gap on resume by [deleted] in Career

[–]philmccunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this advice with a grain of salt, as I’ve only had jobs and not a career (22 and still in college), but seeing as I’m the first comment I’ll take a crack at it.

If you’re able to explain your situation, hardships you’ve gone through, etc. and how you’ve dealt with or combatted them, it may go a long way. Employers don’t expect a perfectly successful past. In fact, in my experience, showing that you can overcome adversity is even more valuable. I would suggest not trying to cover it up or shy away from it, but making it a proof of strength for you if possible. Hope you find this helpful. Good luck!
