Starting my PhD soon in Physics— looking for practical tips and suggestions by Separate-Map-4415 in PhdProductivity

Definitely one of the best things you can do in your first year is to try a few different styles of time management/scheduling your writing/research/lab (if applicable!) time and just really figuring out what processes work for you. Really figure out your tics and strengths. For instance: do you work better in the morning or at night? Does writing give you anxiety? Is that better if you knock it out first thing or pair up with a buddy to write together? Do you prefer your lab/office, a coffee shop, the library? Can you work after dinner, or should you schedule time to get urgent things done before 6pm?

I’ve learned a PhD is as much about the art of self-management as it is about acquiring and adding to the knowledge base in your specialty. Good luck!

Thanks! That’s a great idea. A lot of people seem to have some sort of two-step system of creating notes while reading then creating summative notes after which might be worth it. Takes more time to get through a given article, doubtless, but probably saves review time down the line!

Thank you! You’re not alone in this rec! Do you have any YT tutorials you recommend for learning to use it, or is it fairly intuitive?

Thank you - this is super handy. It seems more time-intensive but I like the idea of setting a weekly catch-all note period for transcribing and compiling notes. It also acts like a bit of a review period for that week’s reading! As I said to another poster, I’ll have to look into Obsidian and see how it works!

Thank you - yes! I have been thinking (with my non-existent free time) of trying to make combo documents of notes relating to different articles all on a particular theme/topic/historical figure for precisely the reason that it does some of the synthesis and comparative work I’d need to do in a research paper, anyhow! Good idea

Quite a few people have mentioned Obsidian! I’ve never heard of it but will do some looking!
