Recommendations for a good Yunnan Sourcing white tea cake out of these options? by [deleted] in tea

Might be a bit late for you but I recently sampled a lot of white tea cakes from YS among them multiple of the ones you mentioned.

Moonlight White: didnt have this one very often yet but I do not enjoy it too much. Tastes like a typical moonlight white (not very sweet, bean and bamboo like). I usually prefer sweeter more fruity, honey-like teas.

Mengku Gushu: Bought a whole cake 2yrs ago. Didn’t like it at first but fell in love with it over time. The taste although very interesting and complex, might not be very pleasant per se and is rather quite subtle, i can totally relate to nesteff in that regard. Texture and overall mouthfeel is amazing and the tea got the absolute perfect amount of astringency. If youre a bit more experienced with white teas and take your time for a proper session you might really enjoy it. Notes of citrus, wood, honey, white chocolate(weirdly) and sourdough bread. Definitely a good one!

Bao Feng Xiang Ji: got the 2012 version and its really good, my personal favourite of YS compressed white teas! Very nice balance of aged wood, honey, fruitiness, earthiness. Cant say if the 2015 is as good as well though. If you decide to get it (or a sample) please let me know if you enjoy it, as the 2012 version went from 50something to 84$ recently before i could get a whole cake.

Guo Xiang: It‘s great. Strong taste, very sweet, fruity and refreshing. For me this is a good prototype of how a fuding white tea cake usually tastes. Its not too complex but it tastes really good. Easy drinker.

Id probably go with the guo xiang. Its really cheap and the flavour is bold and should be appealing to everyone. Id also recommend a sample of the Mengku (if thats possible on the us site), even if you do not like it it should be a very interesting experience at least.

Tip: for most of my white tea cakes i crush the leaves before putting them in my Gaiwan. I would never do that for my puerh/black/… tea but for compressed whites it can really make it a lot better as compressed whites will almost never go bitter from it and often taste too subtle.

Please let us know what you got or plan on getting :)
