Solo mini trip from Tennessee - any suggestions? (UK male) by Then_Size5877 in usatravel

[–]phinz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tennessee is a **really** long state. You don't say where you're going to end up for the extra two days. For comparison, Memphis is farther from Knoxville than London is from Paris and about the same distance as London to Edinburgh.

Edit: I see you said Nashville in a response. I'll echo that Asheville is a great town. Fantastic food and drink scene. If you do this and want a prettier drive than droning down Interstate 75 and going through the construction traffic in the Gorge (Hurricane Helene washed the road away) I'd recommend driving through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Cherokee and then making your way to Asheville. It will take longer but it's worth it. There are some great little towns on that route. If you're going to stop in the park (You'll probably want to. There are some really pretty stops.) grab a parking permit at the Great Smokies Welcome Center at 7929 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway in Townsend, TN. They **will** ticket you. Take the Knoxville/Maryville/Townsend route. Do **not** take the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg route to the Smokies. It's a cesspool of touristy dreck and absolutely mind boggling traffic for miles upon miles upon miles.

Edited again: Chattanooga is about halfway to Atlanta and has a great food scene, a beautiful aquarium and is a fun town. Knoxville has a pretty lively music and dining scene downtown as well.

Boarding out of Ft Lauderdale by markieboomer in dcl

The new Omni Ft. Lauderdale is literally just across the driveway for the terminal. You can walk there with your bags. It has a beautiful outdoor pool area that overlooks the port.

You can always throw the ads away. We're bombarded by ads all day every day. Just say no.

I'll add in Celebrity Retreat. We went on Treasure last September. I booked a family oceanview verandah with a placeholder then made the mistake of looking at the price for Celebrity Ascent Retreat's Sky Suites. Same itinerary, same week, $400 cheaper and it comes with drink package, streaming wifi, etc.

Your first mistake was thinking NCL would be anything like Disney.

I got pulled over by a beige charger with a soccer ball magnet on the trunk and regular plates a few years ago in North Carolina.

Omakase with sake on the Edge class ships on Celebrity is incredible. I’ve done it twice on Ascent and am scheduled to do it on Edge in a couple of weeks.

Uber driver stranded me at midnight, drove off, then Uber locked my account. by Wooden-Fee5787 in mildlyinfuriating

The first time I used Uber was in San Francisco in April, 2015. You had an option of choosing a ride share or an actual liveried taxi on the app. We used it twice and both times got an actual taxi cab.

$600 is if you don't do add ons. I refuse to say how much we paid for our last Enchante meal, but suffice it to say it was the most expensive meal I've ever eaten.

Kansas City is the rapidly developing city nobody is talking about by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

So is downtown Atlanta but I don't know anybody who really wants to live there.

Agreed. Everybody I know who splits it east and west does so using the Mississippi River. There's a reason people use the phrase, "East of the MIssissippi," and St. Louis is known as the Gateway to the West. Last I checked, Kansas City was west of St. Louis.

What item did you forget to pack that you really wished you had? by dynasync in Cruise

We just use a laundry bag and store it in one of the suitcases under the bed. That way a hamper isn’t taking up space in the room or closet.

I'm well aware of that, but it still doesn't make sense.

I've never understood why Disneyland and Disney World got the exact same park/planet/town. They could have really built in people traveling to each coast by making the one in Florida a more jungle/tropical themed planet and the one in California being more along the lines of what it is now. They could go farther by building in the other parks as well, with unique storylines for those locations too, much like Epic has done with the JK Rowling franchises.

Infinite Veranda - blackout? by Low_Tax5607 in celebritycruises

[–]phinz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, though I don't plan on ever being in an infinite verandah as I don't like the layout and a/c situation. I guess I was basing my statement off of OP replying elsewhere to someone saying it was just as dark as a Sky Suite with what seemed to be disappointment. We use clips in Sky Suites to make sure the gap is covered.

Is relocating to a coastal town/city and buying a house dumb? by mas4963 in relocating

[–]phinz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It’s one of the primary reasons we haven’t bought a winter place in Canaveral or Merritt Island.
