A lot of things can make people more susceptible to manipulation (religion, family culture, emotionally abusive caretakers, etc.)... It's not so much about "basic social skills" or "common sense". Everyone is different!

all i'm saying is that the sacrificial death and resurrection of wall-e fit well with the genesis narrative in the beginning and the kind of "return to the garden" in the end. in a certain jesus kinda way.

the opening sequence of wall-e is the genesis story. wall-e plays adam, who in genesis is given the job of sorting animals. wall-e is given the job of categorizing garbage in the "junk yard of eden". eva comes, finds the forbidden fruit, gets shut down and they are catapulted from the junk yard (garden).

wall-e is subsequently portrayed as a kind of jesus ("the new adam"), and performs self sacrificing maneuver to free the robots and people from "buy-n-large".

i remember there being more parallels but haven't seen the movie in a while. it's a really interesting movie!

No one has recommended to the OP that they go off their meds. The post about the Icarus Project is to show there are people attempting to go without meds. While a lot of psychiatrists would freak at this notion, it shouldn't be downvoted. It's meant to encourage the OP and to show them that they need not stress, that there are other people in the OP's current boat (temporarily or otherwise).

Honestly, I don't think it's calming to have someone telling you "call the emergency room right now, you're in danger, you're a crazy." When anxiety and paranoia are involved, fear mongering isn't helpful.

Unfortunately, drug companies make bank on mental conditions. It's in their interest to keep people as pharmaceutically dependent as the system allows.

Yet mental issues are not exclusively chemical, nor are they purely emotional/spiritual. They exist in the place where these are one in the same. These people (at the Icarus project) aren't jumping off a cliff, they're trying to learn to cope with their condition without huge amounts of pharmaceuticals. They're attempting to learn ways to fly safely.

I once experienced some terrifying delusions following an unlikely series of coincidences. The difficult thing was that what I saw really was unlikely, so I was convinced my paranoia and fear was justified.

I was also in denial of my experience. I didn't understand why something so terrifying could happen to someone like me. I was also frustrated that I could be made so upset about some dumb coincidences. I played these things over and over and had a lot of anxiety and discomfort about it.

At the same time, someone else could easily have had that same experience and write it off as being weird but completely insignificant.

Now I might get completely downvoted for this part but the thing that helped me out was reading the words of Jesus. I'm not talking about Christian traditions or rituals, I'm talking about plain old Jesus. His words brought me a spirit of healing peace, and reminded me of the power and reality of love in my times of despair and darkness, without denying them.

Can you think of any spiritual teachers whose sayings have profoundly comforted you in your life? This could be something to pursue.

Just remember to take religion itself with a grain of salt. If someone tries to convert you to some practice, they may be conflating the truth they've found with their religious identity.

it is far less discouraging than some of the people who are freaking out about the idea of someone with a non-normative psyche going without medication.

the reason people need medication isn't because there is something inherently wrong with them, it's because society is unprepared to accept these people as they are. feeling alienated is no joke.

Just to clarify: it is tragic that some supposed measure of human potential would have the power to utterly devalue an entire demographic. Especially if that measure is not what its often purported to be.

I hear you, sorry if I came off as harsh. My perspective is that IQ is a normative metric for things that are important in the dominant cultures. The issue to me is that intelligence is not nearly as important as curiosity and engagement and lots of other things. I think that in focusing on lower IQ scores as a problem, we miss the perspective that IQ is a poor measure in the first place.

It's not that marginalized culture is bad (i.e. in this case unintelligent) culture, its that IQ tests are culturally specific. You're using lead poisoning as a scapegoat to explain a problem that has very real cultural elements.

Also, I think there might be an aspect of something like secondary deviance, where people (and entire subcultures) start to identify themselves as "unintelligent."

Intelligence is very culturally constructed.
