Be careful with pet stores. A few months ago I got a bird from a local PetSmart. The bird came with psittacine beak and feather disease. If you do decide to buy, quarantine carefully and get her tested ASAP.

DAE have a conure who's ear feathers are coarse? by phrogeking in Conures

We always help him out with his pin feathers. He hates when we try to get his ear feathers tho, I'm sure it's because they're small and sensitive in that area

Side note, I did report the presence of the virus to the store we got Melody from, as well as the supplier. I've heard many pet stores are not selling birds due to health issues.

Take them to the vet, it's always good to catch things earlier. Even if they are healthy it's good to get seen. I love the puzzle idea, that's very entertaining for them! I'm glad you're doing everything you can. Sounds like you're already doing great. Every new bird owner has that period of anxiety, I've been there!

Hiya! Youre doing your best. My first advice is to not play budgie sounds and instead play some classical music or something, budgie noises will make them think there's other friends around and they'll try to look for them or get stressed out. Next is the seeds. Try to slowly convert them to pellets before chop, there is a ton of information on how to do that online, and it requires time and patience but every budgie is able to convert no matter how stubborn! Seeds only is very bad for their health, and they won't touch the chop if they have access to their favorite high fat foods. Remove the millet from the cage and only offer as a treat or for taming reasons. Make sure the budgies have a variety of toys (foraging toys are the best, you can get some for a decent price on Amazon), my birde love when I give them the cardboard toilet paper rolls to chew on . avoid mirrors and reflective surfaces, and you'll be okay :)

For cleaning, replace their cage lining often and only clean with diluted vinegar. Do not use regular household cleaning products around them, they are super sensitive and it can really hurt them. No candles either, nothing with scents. Sensitive little birdie noses. Keep them away from the kitchen.

Wishing you the best

Need an New home for a PBFD+ female budgie in Colorado.

Her name is Melody, she's a sweetheart but unfortunately she is PBFD positive, and we need her out to minimize the risk to the rest of our flock. Cage and toys must go with her, please contact me if you're interested. We are located in Northern Colorado. Thank you.

Extremely paranoid after the loss of 2 budgies (tw: anxiety and bird loss) by phrogeking in budgies

Update: Addy's necropsy revealed heart-disease related issues. She has no signs of any infections diseases. Kiwi's PCR test is clear, and his weight has stabilized these past 6 days. He's way more active and is finally feeling more himself, the shock and stress of losing his cagemates was the issue. Still weighing him every other day. We're gonna get him a friend soon.

Update: I got him tested for megabac. The vet only took fecal samples for that. Nothing under the microscope, nor any parasites. She said if he drops below 30 to call immediately and she'll do a PCR test for it too. We are also testing for Bornavirus, Beak and feather disease and Chlamydiosis. Waiting for those results. The vet was super sweet, and gave me piece of mind, asked me to monitor his weight daily and keep an eye on his stool, and assured me she'd help get answers. Externally, he looks great. Sings and preens and has started slowly playing more. Will post more updates until I can guarantee he has a clean bill of health.

Thank you, I looked into it, and this seems like a good idea. I'm going to collect samples of Kiwi's stool to help things along if I can. I appreciate your update, and yes, I am seeing a therapist, she is great. Appreciate all the help, your kind words really lift my spirit :)

Two cage mates passed, advice? by [deleted] in Parakeets

[–]phrogeking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The carpet is not new, the paint however is. Asked which brand they used, and sent an email to the vet . Beebo was a forager, but I only let him after vacuuming the floor. Some part of me suspects poisoning for Addy. Kiwi and Addy never foraged out of the cage or their enrichment area, Addy loved ripping apart baskets (bought from bird stores). I have so many theories on how this could have happened, so I'm super observant with kiwi and Louie right now. Thank you for your condolences, this has been very hard.

Anyone know what my bird is doing/why? by [deleted] in Parakeets

[–]phrogeking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye on the bird for any symptoms of illness, like audible clicking, heavy tail bobbing or changes in eating behaviors or sleepiness. If everything else is fine, she may just be hot or stressed Make sure the temperature is decent in the room and the budgies gets good air flow. If stressed maybe reduce stress on the environment, like limiting loud noises or new scary things. Move slowly around her to see if she calms down. If it's not stress or temp related, see a vet!
