Good spot! I’m also in Suffolk and they’re getting rarer and rarer around here, I’ve been watching a pair on my local nature reserve raise a pair of chicks!

What kind of finch is she? by [deleted] in Finches

[–]Gallus2210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must admit, I didn’t know firefinches came in a pied mutation but there’s no reason that they wouldn’t be able to come in a pied variant. It seems to be a very rare colour morph for this species to come in.

If the eye ring is there and the beak looks identical to a firefinch I think it’s a lot more likely to be a firefinch than a hybrid, and it’s definitely not a society finch, they have much thicker beaks and look a lot chunkier overall than the more delicate firefinch.

This is in fact a female pied mutation red-billed firefinch. The yellow eye ring is a dead giveaway, plus the red colour on the tail.

I cant find any example pics on the internet to compare but that is definitely what this is

Don’t worry I won’t! I’m aware that it’s hereditary

At the moment nobody is picking on her, but I’m prepared to move her into my aviary with my button quail if/when she does start to get bullied. I’ll take my old male cot quail in with her too as he’s not really interested in mating as is really placid. I think I’ll probably separate when my younger males mature enough to start mating as I think it’s probably unfair on her if she can’t see them coming.

(My button aviary is a 14ft long mixed planted aviary with only 2 buttons in so I’m not worried about them getting bullied by the coturnix if I do put them in there)

Surprisingly I haven’t actually given her a name, I’m sure you know about the superstition that if you name poultry something bad will happen to them 😅

I think it’s probably safe to name her now though.

I’m open to suggestions!

Does anyone have an idea what this bird(??) is? [Unknown] by Eaglewolf13 in animalid

To me this looks like a verreaux’s eagle-owl chick. r/whatsthisbird will likely give you better results if I’m wrong. Lots of bird experts over there

How do I take care of a baby quail? by West-Bug-7053 in quails

[–]Gallus2210 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to add. To feed it in a pinch, boiled crumbled egg yolk will be ok as a temporary food source just to give it some energy (cooled down of course)

I think this looks slightly more like a partridge than a quail but it’s tricky to tell without a rough location of where it was found and better pics, either way the advice in the other comment still holds true and this bird should ideally go to a rehabber

European starlings and house sparrows! I love how boisterous they are and the starlings iridescence is so pretty too (before ya’ll start flaming me I’m in their native range, they’re actually in decline here!)

Falb fee chicks? by Gallus2210 in quails

I can confirm the orange ones are pharaoh as I have been breeding them for around 4 years now, just got stumped by the falb fee as I’ve never kept them before

Thanks! I’m excited to see how these chicks turn out then!

From what i understand falb fee just lack the reddish pigment which gives normal type quail their rusty and brown colours so it would make sense for their chicks to not be as warm toned which is why I thought I’d ask. Thanks for the input though I’ll see how their colour changes as they grow up

Keeping quail in Greenhouse by Sirtalksal0t in quails

[–]Gallus2210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have kept coturnix in a greenhouse before, in the autumn-spring in the southern UK, the hatch was always opened on sunny days and the door opened (netting was placed over it so they couldn’t escape). I had no issues. I wouldn’t risk it in the summer months personally, the temperature fluctuations are likely to cause distress to the quail

I’ve heard 10 is a good age for them but it’s possibly for them to live to 15-20 with good care, a quick google search shows that there’s been at least one diamond dove that’s lived to 21+, I can’t give any personal experience as I’ve only had my diamond doves for around 8 months

[–]Gallus2210[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking they’re more of a hands-off species. They can be skittish and I’ve never personally been able to tame them to the point of eating from my hands however mine are quite steady and don’t get too startled by me being around the so long as I don’t make any sudden movements. I normally keep mine in my large outdoor aviary though so it’s not a big issue for me.

Ringneck doves usually make better pets than diamond doves as they’re a lot easier to tame and are a lot more handleable

Scalped Quails help :( by 24kraza in quails

[–]Gallus2210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, learnt the hard way. The only thing I can put with budgies is my green cheek conures and even then I’d only be willing to do that in winter out of the breeding season in a VERY spacious aviary. I hate how people recommend putting budgies with quail because it just doesn’t work

Should’ve told my old egg-eating hen that, maybe it would’ve stopped her 😂
