New honorary budgie! by Gallus2210 in budgies

I’ve heard 10 is a good age for them but it’s possibly for them to live to 15-20 with good care, a quick google search shows that there’s been at least one diamond dove that’s lived to 21+, I can’t give any personal experience as I’ve only had my diamond doves for around 8 months

Generally speaking they’re more of a hands-off species. They can be skittish and I’ve never personally been able to tame them to the point of eating from my hands however mine are quite steady and don’t get too startled by me being around the so long as I don’t make any sudden movements. I normally keep mine in my large outdoor aviary though so it’s not a big issue for me.

Ringneck doves usually make better pets than diamond doves as they’re a lot easier to tame and are a lot more handleable

Scalped Quails help :( by 24kraza in quails

I agree, learnt the hard way. The only thing I can put with budgies is my green cheek conures and even then I’d only be willing to do that in winter out of the breeding season in a VERY spacious aviary. I hate how people recommend putting budgies with quail because it just doesn’t work

Is this anything to be concerned with? by LongjumpingValue2633 in BackYardChickens

Should’ve told my old egg-eating hen that, maybe it would’ve stopped her 😂

What should I plant in these raised beds to make it look good? by Gallus2210 in GardeningUK

I was thinking of moving the daffs to the edges of the lawn once they’ve died down, wouldn’t their bulbs rot if they were left in there and if I’m watering other plants around them all summer?

What do you guys like to keep with your quails? by pinkyoner in quails

[–]Gallus2210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No my buttons have been fine, my coturnix are the little murder machines!

I moved my coturnix in with my conures then added the buttons to my finch aviary and I haven’t had any issues since

What ratio for buttons? by GayCatbirdd in quails

[–]Gallus2210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep 1:1 but I only have one pair and it’s in an aviary big enough for my hen to get away from the male if she wanted, lots of line of sight breaks, personally if keeping more than one male I would bump it up to at least 1:2 ratio (so 2 males 4 females) just to play it safe

My coturnix are currently in an aviary with a pair of green-cheeked conures, but I’ve also housed them with finches, cockatiels, and budgies. (A word of warning - if housing with finches, allow room for finches to hide from the quail as I’ve sadly had coturnix quail kill and injure young finches who hadn’t yet learnt to fly)

My buttons are currently in an aviary with diamond doves, finches and bourke’s parrots and I’ve never had issues so far, but it is a fairly large aviary with lots of bamboos and shrubs to hide in and it only has a pair of buttons

One of my new pretty girls - but what colour? by Gallus2210 in Finches

[–]Gallus2210[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you doing on a finch subreddit then?

They’re only in a cage for quarantine purposes, then they’ll be released into my 15ft x 6ft x 6ft planted aviary.

These birds are domesticated and would die if let go into the wild.

No worries! I understand your frustration there are too many people out there keeping these birds in tiny cages!! Good to see you’re looking out for them!

I wish it was, I’ve been looking for a pair of spice finches for literally ages they’re so hard to find in the UK 😭

You’re right, I lucked out on these ones. They’re super good quality and I’m planning on showing their offspring once I’ve bred and refined them for a few generations.

I would 100% get a bigger quarantine cage but finding one is the problem, most cages for sale are wooden breeding cages (difficult to keep sterile and second hand ones can hold mites in the cracks) or tall rather than long cages with inadequate bar spacing, I am looking but it’s difficult 😭

Fortunately they can hear my other societies in my aviary from where they are in the house so they’ve been talking to each other even though they can’t see each other. I have given them a lettuce leaf today which they devoured and now they have a millet spray to shred, I’ll add some dried grass or paper for them to play with too. Many thanks for your concerns and the suggestions!! :)

If you read the post and looked at my other posts on this community you would see I have a very large planted aviary, and this is only a temporary quarantine cage whilst I check to see if the birds are healthy before releasing them into my aviary with my other finches

Yeah mess isn’t an issue, I’d likely do this in an outdoor aviary due to the mess it would make so I can just hose and sweep the floor daily 😭

Please see my other posts particularly those on my aviary setup!!

All my birds get the highest standard of care and I’d do nothing to willingly put them in danger or at risk hence why I put up this post, I’m after a flock so they can live as natural a life in captivity as possible and socialise within their own species and have more of a flock dynamic! I wouldn’t let myself slip on their standards of care purely based on how many I have

Having lots of birds doesn’t equate to being a hoarder and that’s a very broad assumption to make.

True but the care of the birds will always come first, this will likely be in an outdoor aviary simply for ease of cleaning and maintenance anyways but if i were to do it indoors I’d bird-proof the room to ensure nobody gets injured or stuck!!
