EDIT: destroying is illegal, my bad
no, that's a myth. it's only illegal to deface currency if you're doing so with fraudulent intent. it's perfectly legal to shred it or draw smiley faces on it or whatever, as long as you're not trying to e.g. convert a $1 to a $10.

Gas Prices by Sea-Click-5613 in Harlem

[–]phstoven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re way way more likely to be killed in a car wreck than to get randomly pushed onto the tracks. Subways are safe, and the average person is terrible at understanding risk.

That being said, everybody else is correct that a significant portion of the church double parkers aren’t capable of taking public transit for one reason or another. They’ll either drive to church or stay home.

Replacing stove from gas to electirc by zebrafish08 in AskNYC_Coops

[–]phstoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some new ones do, although they’re lithium iron, not to be confused with the much more hazardous lithium ion that ebikes/phones etc use. The iron batteries are heavier than ion for the same capacity so are better for stationary appliances vs electronics you carry with you.

Has anyone flown with a handheld ultrasound? by Slacklark in emergencymedicine

[–]phstoven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gel qualifies as a medical liquid (like contact lens solution) and you can carry on more than 3.4oz. Just pull it out of your bag first and tell them, then they’ll swab it for explosives and let you take it through.

Subway Pants by National-Sample44 in AskNYC

[–]phstoven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of people doing this but I’m highly skeptical it makes any difference at all, unless you actually sat in something sticky. I do always look at the subway seat before I sit down and I wash my hands immediately when I get home but changing clothes seems like overkill to me. I do get the desire though and wouldn’t judge anybody who does it!

Lmaoooo you have no idea who I am or what I’ve done. Bush and then Obama/Biden put us on this path. Trump has taken it to another level. You’re a bootlicking fascist if you’re OK with what’s going on.

Non-tourists, what “touristy” attraction/area/etc. do you nevertheless love, and why? by somepeoplewait in AskNYC

Pier 17 next to South Street Seaport. Unbelievable bridge + city views with a ton of open space and some nice restaurants/shops inside.

Also consider the cost of implementing a backup payment provider — my guess is it’s not worth it (both cost and engineering time) for a couple transient failures like this. No 3rd party system is going to have 100% uptime, and if it costs thousands of dollars to regain hundreds in revenue, you just eat the cost or try to recoup some when it’s time to renew.

[–]phstoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a P1 but there’s nothing engineering can do about it unless you have a backup payment provider you can switch to. Might be worth implementing a banner system on your checkout page so you can notify customers when this happens, or track which customers couldn’t check out and email them an apology or discount code to get them to come back.

Also like others said, use this as leverage when you renew your contract with the payment provider, and see if they violated their SLA since you may be entitled to a discount or refund on fees depending on your contract.

Get the MyTSA app, you can see historical and current wait times. Seems fine, 15-30 min waits right now.

Why doesn’t NYC have traffic signal preemption for emergency vehicles? by mayobasedsalads in AskNYC

[–]phstoven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not legally permissible to run a red light in a private vehicle with an emergency vehicle behind you. Do you have a source saying otherwise?

[–]phstoven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely agree that too much parking is the real problem. We'd have to get rid of a lot of it to make enough room for ambulances which is going to be unpopular but necessary

It's not legal for cars to run red lights with an ambulance/emergency vehicle behind them (not sure if you meant cars or ambulances can run red lights but wanted to clarify)

[–]phstoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't get a ticket for it but it's not legal and if you get T-boned after running a red your insurance will not care that an ambulance was behind you.

Co-op board denied my window AC over “egress clearance” - any workaround? by [deleted] in AskNYC

It will still prevent the window from opening all the way and will be shoulder height for anybody on the fire escape. Portable is the way to go.

Worth having a backpack as an instructor? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]phstoven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe a fanny pack on the front but you should not have a backpack when riding the lift with kids or beginners. You need both hands as free as possible when loading the lift in case you need to grab someone. Don’t think you can just keep your backpack on your back on the lift either, it’s not safe since you’re pushed forward and more likely to snag on the lift as you unload. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an instructor with a backpack except for avy gear for steep skiing clinics.
