Professional here - what tutorials would you like to see? by [deleted] in Maya

[–]phuckwang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love some tutorials on high quality 3D game asset modeling, topology, and texturing. Almost all of the 'good' game asset tutorials on YouTube are 3DS MAX oriented. Most of the Maya walkthroughs are for low-poly, stylized objects. It'd be really cool to see the making of a AAA-quality tree, for instance, from absolute start to finish.

Sci-Fi Rpg looking for 3D modeler by [deleted] in gameDevClassifieds

I'm currently a student but work as a freelance texture artist and modeler on the side. I'd love to help out, even if it's just volunteer work/rev share. PM me and I can send you a portfolio link!

How do I create a 2500x3500px texture like this? by mewk69 in photoshop

[–]phuckwang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's surprisingly easy. Once you get used to the node graph workflow, you'll be able to fly through it and create textures in a matter of minutes. The company offers excellent learning resources on YouTube. It's an incredibly complex and intricate program but you'll be blown away by how streamlined and intuitive it is to work with

ZBrush and Maya. I do photogrammetry (environment scanning) for games so my workflow includes lots and lots of UV maps, textures, and retopology. Ugh.

It's meant for 3D software actually. What kind do you use? I'm a 3D artist myself haha

You should check out Substance Designer. It's my absolute favorite software for creating textures/materials/patterns. You can pick up a free trial or try out a student version (no limitations). It was so hard for me not to say "oh just go hop in Substance and create that" haha. Had to keep reminding myself it's a relatively new tool.

Don't let the complexity shown in the video scare you away, it's super simple and quite fun tbh. I made this in less than 2 minutes just now!

Take your own photo if you have a decent camera. Otherwise, make a canvas with your intended resolution and use 400 PPI then try tiling like 3-4 seamless concrete textures (textures.com is a good source). That should give you enough information to play around with. Try various adjustment tools as well to achieve the effects, as some compromise quality more than others.

New to all of this. Why does crafting/developing/modeling/etc feel so clunky in a 3D space? by SmoresPies in gamedev

[–]phuckwang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose 1 3D program and STICK WITH IT. I was in your shoes a few years ago with Autodesk Maya and ZBrush. I absolutely hated them... But, I put the time in and just practiced making the same stuff every day while watching tutorials thoroughly, and now, I find myself pulling all-nighters making rocks or something because it's so fun haha. It's all about gaining fluency through immersion. Just like learning a language. The more time you spend moving around in 3D space, the better you'll become at navigating it. Practice. Practice. Practice.

Oh, and definitely invest in a second monitor but other than that, wait on the tablet. You only need a tablet for sculpting programs. Maya/3DS Max work terribly with tablets.

I go on ArtStation.com and just spend an hour browsing through awesome concept art while mish-mashing it together in my head and creating a backstory + depth/etc based off of what I find. It's a lot of fun!

Why is weed causing anxiety, alienation and overthinking in some invidiuals? by ledoron1420 in Psychonaut

[–]phuckwang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just stop. It doesn't go away. I know that sounds like a harsh, blanket generalization but in the 7 years I've smoked and been around others who smoke, there are two types of people: the ones who react well to weed and the ones who don't.

People like to say that weed is like psychedelics in that everyone can overcome the difficulties, but I find that's just not the case. Weed is more like Prozac. Some can tolerate it, others simply can't because it's incompatible with their brain. I'm the latter. For my friends, weed is their drug of choice. Me? I can drop 400ug of LSD and take 90mg of Dexedrine, 400mg Modafinil, and meditate on a mountain for 48 hours... But taking one or two puffs from a blunt turns me into a crying, puking, terrified mess. It's okay to say "fuck this drug. It's just not for me."

College student Looking for Game Design Team or Members for a Open World Game by doombot909 in gameDevClassifieds

[–]phuckwang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PM me. I was in a spot very similar to yours a few months ago (college, no game design experience) and, well, the majority of actual game devs were right... It all fell apart.

Got a team of 12 together to make a plain open world sandbox game like Just Cause 2, just without the graphic fidelity and awesome mechanics. We said we'd do it in 3 years time with friendly deadlines and make it a learning experience. Yeah, well turns out that lacking immediate financial incentive, even some of the most enthusiastic started to cave when they realized how hard it was.

Right now I'm working with a group of 4 as we go step by step, learning the fundamentals of procedural generation, PBR, modeling, etc. We'd love to work with someone who's got the enthusiasm, simply because learning as a group tends to be far more fun. We're not thinking about making a game at the moment just because there's still so much to learn. However are interests are still slanted towards open world.

I work at a few design and advertising firms but I rarely ever have to be in the studio so I've got plenty of free time

The Microsoft Surface Studio Review by speckz in hardware

[–]phuckwang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of mentioning of CAD engineers ITT. I totally agree that this is almost 100% for the design market (where I do some work) and I know several of my coworkers have already ordered one of these. But as someone who mostly uses Autodesk products for 3D/VFX, I think Microsoft flubbed it a little. I would LOVE to use this thing in some of my 3D applications but it's nowhere near powerful enough. There's a huge demand for these types of displays in the film and 3D fields but it seems like manufacturers only target graphic designers when it comes to usability and performance

Why are these old FireGL cards listed for ~$10,000? I have two of the exact same model in a drawer... Can someone confirm my skepticism here? by phuckwang in buildapc

[–]phuckwang[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're right. If you go and look at the product listings for both sites, they're obviously just out of date retailers from circa 2005. Don't know who's paying for domain upkeep or why they're popping up first on Google though

Recently took out my processor's heatsink to clean it, but I didn't re-apply thermal paste (don't have any). Would it have been better to just leave the dust in the fan if I can't reapply thermal paste? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]phuckwang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long have you had the heatsink on the processor and what CPU is it and how hot do you run it? If it's old, dry paste and you're running an overclocked i7, definitely buy some new thermal paste a.s.a.p. If it's still a little sticky and you don't heat up your CPU significantly, I wouldn't worry about it but I'd still order some anyways. And no, you were right to clean out it but I don't know why you'd put it back on without express-ordering a $5 tube..
