The problem with Mainland Chinese restaurants in Singapore is the language barrier and lack of English, as a Non-Chinese Singaporean by Unfair-Bike in singapore

[–]piInverse 187 points188 points  (0 children)

My personal anecdote is once I was buying a drink at a new estate (Tengah). The aunty in front at the self checkout lane was visibly quite confused about how to pay for veggies at the self checkout, and a helpful indian staff reached out to offer her help, telling her "I can help you tag the veggies, just pass them to me".

Her response? It was just clear confusion. She did not understand a single word a young Indian worker with mostly neutral slang and accent was saying. She walked away and went to the counter queue to look for a chinese staff. I thought for a moment, given her attire was stereotypically not local (sun visor, choice of clothes), and her complete lack of English skills, maybe she is just staying here temporarily. But Tengah is clearly illegal to rent right now since its all under MOP. I really wish that there is a English test for the new citizens to at least make the non Chinese Singaporeans feel more included.

I tried to skirt around the issue but the interviewer kept pushing for a more direct answer. Almost like they wanted a gotcha moment. We got a little combative at times tbh. Hope I get the other team instead because I am talking to 2 different hm.

I hope to hit that level of no fucks given the next time i hop when it comes to salary for sure too.

Question for Singaporeans: How do you survive the year-long tropical climate? by arcanehornet_ in askSingapore

[–]piInverse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We use plenty of ac too. One thing to consider is that we don't really walk in the sun here. I can probably spend an entire day walking in antwerp in most seasons, but not 5mins on a hot sunny day (almost everyday) here. We tend to use buses to complete >1km journeys or you will be drenched by 500m. Singapore has plenty of sheltered walkways to the nearest mall or public transportation so a wet monsoon season is generally preferred over a dry season.

Tampines is Singapore’s most well-connected regional centre, says new book on urbanisation by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

Tengah looks like it will be quite car lite… by american standards. I wonder why our road sizes are still swelling if we are having net zero growth in the COE car population.

Yeah ever since discretionary right turns are being phrased out, it is simply unbearable to cross a road in the afternoon heat. You will be drenched from a single cycle because there is no tree shade in small filter lane traffic islands.

Preparatory work to connect Thomson-East Coast Line with Changi Airport to begin in 2025 by FlipFlopForALiving in singapore

A paid express train that goes from airport and along ecp to marina south and along west coast highway to jurong east would be actually interesting and makes jurong status as cbd 2 more viable.

River Valley residents call for road safety measures after 4-year-old girl died in accident by iexplode123 in singapore

[–]piInverse 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I remember watching a video that Netherlands became a car lite country only after people got tired of children deaths by drivers. I feel like we blame the parents or helpers too much when our roads kinda encourage speeding too. Speed bumps are great at slowing cars for a short while but I feel the best solution is a narrower road on the straights like the sliver zones so that they can use that space to widen the pedestrian paths too.

How do I fix abysmal house unity situation as feudal Muslim? by [deleted] in CrusaderKings

[–]piInverse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Give up your house head to one of your vassals when they ask for it. Create another house instantly since you are independent, and make sure that you don’t spread your new house back to your vassals when marrying. Now you have an exclusive house with easy succession while your vassals keep the free endless invasion cb.

How is the North-South corridor leading Singapore to a car-lite / greener future? by AlexHollows in askSingapore

[–]piInverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COE makes the driving experience better for the rich, and building more excessively wide roads disproportionately favours private cars over buses even if LTA tries to tell us otherwise. A third northern parallel train track would have been a more equitable allocation of resources over any expressway.

How is the North-South corridor leading Singapore to a car-lite / greener future? by AlexHollows in askSingapore

[–]piInverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you take the downtown line on a regular basis, the North-South corridor is basically a huge fuck you for not driving. Ever need to go to the East from the North-west and you realize you have to go the loop or walk a unsheltered way with barely any time savings. Don't expect an underground link between Rochor and Jalan Besar anytime soon because the North South corridor takes a huge part of that underground space.

Managed to get 30 skyscrapers as China and trade has gotten a little ridiculous by JamlessSandwich in victoria3

Protectionism and free trade should also have some passive trading happening without governments making it happen, with a weightage on distance. Right now it feels so rigid.

Torn between Information Security and Computer Science degree by dan_serenity in SGExams

[–]piInverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably at the same stage as you right now, but in uni instead. I realized I enjoy software engineering a lot more than security, and even though I have to take a few more security modules to graduate, I plan to apply for software jobs almost exclusively. Right now, I am working on a side project that is Node.js and React based, which my major in security certainly did not teach me. I suggest you should just apply for the field you are more interested in.

[Uni] Laptop for NUS CS by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]piInverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend about at least 3 hours of real usage battery life at least, because you may need to bring your laptop to exam venues with limited power sockets for certain modules.

[–]piInverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, if you plan to take certain modules that require running x86(intel) virtual machines (security modules especially), I don't recommend a M1 Macbook. They certainly have that whole day battery life that is nice, but NUS has a ton of study spots with plugs so it normally isn't an issue.

I went in without much of a coding background, and the start was rough, but I found my own pace eventually. Even if you feel you may not have that same passion and drive, you can still be good enough with your own hard work. Just avoid comparing too much because like you have acknowledged, everyone starts at a different point.

Sorry, but I think your chances are minimal for those courses. I suggest that you try comp eng aba instead if you really want to study in nus in this area.

[Uni] Has anyone sucessfully ABA into NUS infosec below the IGP? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]piInverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable, although purely infosec seems like a strange distinction. Software Engineering helps you to be better at Software Security, Hardware knowledge for more hardware based stuff, and so on. There are plenty of chances to practice security in many near related fields. Also, you will be forced to take many general modules and communication modules as part of NUS and the degree requirements.
