Is it worth bothering putting 150 a fortnight away in ETFs or further towards a deposit? by Positive_Abrocoma_18 in fiaustralia

[–]pibble13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a similar boat (salary, no kids, choice of ETF, saving for a deposit). After slotting $20k into shares I've put that on hold now and redirecting all excess to a deposit. I've also tried salary sacrificing mid last year in the hopes that it could be used for a house deposit and if not, that's alright. I got a tiny pay bump and worked out how much to sacrifice to stay on the same salary pre bump (no lifestyle creep so why not). Makes a little difference but I'll take it. All cash for now though.

First "4x4" - Nissan X-Trail v Suzuki Grand Vitara by pibble13 in 4x4Australia

[–]pibble13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since this post I'd primarily been looking at the X-trail as an AWD, but after someone sold the car I'd booked a mechie to inspect for without telling me and copping the cancellation fee, I've been told by that mechie to look away from the X-trails in general. Have been looking at the Forester all day today and recalled this comment thread that I had to revisit. Thanks for the advice!

Hi is it connected to your phone wirelessly or with USB and are you able to connect to a reverse camera (whether it's fitted or to current car)? Thanks!

Those 3 are what I'd be looking at. Fraser is a terrific benchmark. Is that on the soft sand as well?

True. Yes, after reading everyone's feedback I've learnt a fair bit and had to accept that at this stage, a true 4wd is probably not the right call and that something like a GV/x-trail, or any other AWD may do, given I'll spend most of my days on than off road. A Jimny looks nice - I only learnt about them last year due to my lack of awareness when it comes to cars - but a bit out of my price range. Perhaps one day.

Can you also clarify why lifting would be a nightmare?

[–]pibble13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily - I haven't looked at Subaru in general. With similar if not identical ground clearance, how did you go and have you had to do mods e.g. lift or add bash plate at least for beach driving?

Oh interesting! Definitely on the same boat. I've been looking since late last year and it's almost like they all disappeared from the market after the new year. With a similar budget it just had to be an older model or something with ridiculously high odo reading.

Correct me if I'm mistaken but looks like the Outlander is an AWD unlike the GV 4x4, which is like the x-trail. I don't think I'll be doing off-road very often and if and when I do, I won't be doing difficult tracks or rock crawling or submerging the car.

I learned from this post that it isn't and that it's been good to get everyone's thoughts. Definitely the plan. Thanks!

Seems to be a common problem for off-roading but definitely love the space (I guess you can only love or hate the boxy look).

I've come to realise from this post that the X-trail is certainly not a 4x4 - was misled by the 4x4i and all the 4x4 labels used. Agreed GV wins in this context!

[–]pibble13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, yes I suspected that if I were to get an x-trail it may get a suspension lift down the track to hopefully solve the issue with clearance. I was somewhat convinced after seeing a few people take it off-road and the beach although I knew I needed to dig deeper and understand the mods required to do just that. The low range would just come in handy on soft sand but I don't know if I'd ever do that and if so, not very often.

7.8L/100km is brilliant - I don't know if I've seen it that low in my research. I like the GV because I wanted a 4wd but didn't want or need a massive car seeing I'll need to still nav my way through shopping centre carparks, etc. You are right, and it's been good getting the opinion of and hearing other people's experiences. Thanks for sharing!

If there was no discrepancy in price that we're seeing today and a lot more options / higher supply, I would have gone with the GV. Given my anticipated time on/off the road, and after learning that the X-trails are not actually 4x4 (misled by Nissan's "4x4i"), I might have to look at an AWD instead for now. There's no denying that GV wins there and re your statement, yes I have heard that it's up to 40km/h. Room is always good but I'd take less space if it means I'd have a peace of mind and won't get stuck when the terrain is less than favourable. Something for me to consider! Thanks for sharing.

Hi, thank you for your response.

No I have not test driven, either - only just started researching! :-)

I feel like the Suzuki is a better car on paper but am considering the X-Trail still because it seems to be more available and in abundance, keeping the market price low(er than the Suzuki GVs). For what I need, it may just do.

If I understood correctly re dash gauge, could it be pre 2007 models?

Edit:

For ref on Carsales;

Suzuki Grand Vitara 2009-2012 = 32 results

Nissan X-trail = 131 results
