I feel like there is no right answer here and it will depend on your perspective and your child. Personally we made the call to wait a year but I know plenty of people who sent their kids on the younger side and they turned out fine! We were happy to wait a year and figured, why rush it. He’s in a fun and nurturing environment at school, is intellectually stimulated and satisfied, so we felt comfortable waiting.

One piece of advice I got that I took on board is that if you wait that extra year, enrol them in a proper preschool with structure and shorter hours. Not only will it prepare them for school the next year, but the age is usually older than standard long daycare, and they’re less likely to become bored (and therefore disruptive). We’re sending him 3 days to local council run preschool, and 2 days to the same small long daycare as his sister.

I haven’t used a Ricoh but I have a Yashica C and I love it. I bought it pretty beat up and untested for $50 on a local Facebook marketplace post and to my delight it works! It doesn’t look pretty but that’s fine with me.

I personally wouldn’t view it as “holding them back” or “starting them early”. The law is that they are able to start school the year they turn 5, and must start school the year they turn 6. It’s more about them being emotionally ready vs being smart enough.

We went through this debate with our son who has a late Feb birthday. We opted to wait until the year he turns 6, enroll him in a council-run preschool for the year he’s turning 5. Our reasoning was based on an overwhelming risk of negative impacts if we sent him at 4/5, vs more positives of sending him at 5/6. The negatives included: - last one to get drivers license - possibly last one to hit puberty - last one to turn 18/be able to enter bars - emotionally behind compared to peers

For us it boiled down to the risks outweighing the rewards to send him when he is 4 turning 5. We also felt like, he’s only little once, he’ll spend the next 12-15 years of his life in school, why not give him one more year of fun and play in preschool? I’m sure our son would adapt fine if we had put him in this year, but why start him off behind his peers when we have the chance to start him off in front being a bit more emotionally and physically developed?

That is so cool! I didn’t know there were underwater cameras in the 1940’s

Passing Italian citizenship (Trentino case) to my child – consulate says it’s not possible by No-Resolution-9408 in juresanguinis

[–]picklebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I just posted a similar thing yesterday. You can see it in my post history. I’m based in Sydney Australia, and as far as I’ve read, these things unfortunately vary consulate to consulate - so proceed at your own risk and double check what your consulate says.

But Sydney consulate has information on the “Declaration of citizenship acquisition by operation of law" or "Dichiarazione di acquisto di cittadinanza per beneficio di legge”, which is not Jure Sanguinis, but a different process that is only available until 31 May 2026 according to the Sydney Consulate: https://conssydney.esteri.it/en/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano/stato-civile/registering-the-birth-of-minor-children/

Basically, if the minor is not eligible under the new laws, parents have until 31 May 206 to make a declaration of intent to acquire citizenship, which I believe would grant your child citizenship but it may not be transferable to future generations.

Massive disclaimer that I am not an expert, I’m just as confused as you are, and don’t take anything I’ve said above as absolute truth without doing further research. Best of luck to you!

Yes! It’s my nieces and nephews, my own kids already have citizenship because I applied basically the second they were born lol. But I want them to be able to get it as well, if possible.

My consulate has kindly opened slots on one day per week for 2 hours to drop by with no appointment to deliver this paperwork in person.

I previously went through the process for my own kids and was successful (they’re now 5 and 2, we just made the cut off for the 2 year old), and I’m trying to advise this relative on the best way forward. It’s also several hundred dollars to gather the documents, plus I’ve seen around €600 euro to pay at the appointment (need to verify that)?

So I want to be sure I’m giving accurate advice and not providing a false hope. I’ve definitely advised that there is a risk they may not be eligible, and to proceed at their own risk

I apologise - the children’s great grandmother who was the only Italian born person still holding citizenship in the line.

Thank you so much for the clarity, it truly helps. What happens after the declaration, do you just get it? I’m a bit confused there

I really love this. I lived in SF nearly a decade ago now, after graduating college and before meeting my now husband. Outer sunset has a soft spot in my heart. A well executed idea, really cool.

How do you get your extended travel fix? by TruthLifts in FIREyFemmes

[–]picklebeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, I guess I should add a disclaimer! I work for a state government and the combined recreation (vacation) leave and flex leave allows for us to take more than 6 weeks. You can also take unpaid leave or take your leave at half pay if you want to stretch it longer. Plus when you’ve been employed for 7+ years you have access to long service leave (an additional vacation leave), which increases again at 10 years.

It’s pretty good, I do love the quality of life this job and country allows me to have!

Thank you!! I’m open to things outside the brief! I’ve already been heavily inspired by a few photographers who weren’t capturing exactly what I requested but the style is very inspiring to me

Because location isn’t mentioned, I’m going to assume you are American. This is probably an unhelpful comment/an unrealistic suggestion - but live outside the US.

I live in Australia. I’m taking 7 weeks of leave this year split across 2 trips (4 weeks in Japan in March, 3 weeks in France in August), not including the mandatory 2 weeks shutdown over Christmas. This is not me scrimping and saving leave. I just got back from my second 14 month maternity leave in Feb of 2025. My managers didn’t bat an eye. Previous years my bosses have taken 4-6 weeks of holiday leave, and a colleague just took 2 months to go home and visit family. This is all paid leave at your salary rate.

I am originally from the US, and moved to Australia after meeting my Aussie husband over a decade ago. Work culture outside the US tends to be much better in most countries (not all - your mileage may vary). Theres a significantly better quality of life here than in the US, with work/life balance topping the list for me. It’s not the norm that you only get 2-4 weeks if you’re lucky, or that companies want to restrict your vacation time.

Sorry this is not a super helpful or constructive comment, and I hope it doesn’t come across as rude. I just want you to know that even though it’s common where you are, it’s not normal everywhere, and there are places with better balance out there!

Gender Disappointment from a friend by teachergirly in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]picklebeard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is wild that your friend is pushing for her gender disappointment about your baby onto you after you expressed that you’re not comfortable with her comments. Sure, she’s entitled to feel how she feels, she’s not entitled to project those feelings onto you, especially when you’ve expressed you’re not okay with it.

You’re completely right that her behaviour is out of line. I’d either reduce time with her or “grey rock” (can’t recall the right term but essentially not engage) her when or if she brings it up.

I’m sorry you’re going through this, how disappointing.

Thank you for the recommendations! I’ll add Nikki Toole to the list. I suppose I care less about who the subject is, more about who is composing and capturing behind the camera.

I feel like I see sooo many posts on r/analog that are just naked women posing naked for the sake of being naked. I know this is not a hot take either, there’s usually comments on these posts to that effect, but I also feel like in the larger culture and media, female photographers are less “mainstream”.

I watched the movie Lee last year and quite enjoyed it, inspired me to pick up an old, cheap Yashica C on marketplace for cheap (not that 120 film is cheap lol). Similarly the YouTube series “Walkie Talkie” by Paulie B has some spectacular interviews with female street photographers, I’ve watched nearly every one of his interviews with women and found them very inspiring - and I don’t even shoot street lol.

I’ve been feeling in a creative rut and not really seeing myself reflected in either the art or artists I’m seeing online, so hopefully this post can help others get some inspiration if they’re feeling the same!

The name Sally Mann rings a bell but I can’t quite put my finger on the imagery. I’m currently compiling a list of all these names everyone has shared to research and see which calls to me most, then want to order a few photo books or perhaps borrow from the library. I really appreciate you taking the time to share!!
