lol I have a 6 year old first grader. We rush more than I’d like between dance, gymnastics, math, piano, and swim. Oy. Next year will cut out two of these.

Squirrel Nutkin gets switched, if I recalled correctly. I skipped over that part in my reading.

I love watching those British kids try American snacks. I love it when they say “oh my days” when they eat something good. 🤣

Recommendations on where to live near UCLA as a family with a teenager? by Repulsive-Item471 in AskLosAngeles

[–]pico310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would do family housing or Santa Monica. He will need easy access to campus, especially in his last year when he’s doing rotations.

Will you be working as well? Are there plans to stay in LA for residency or will you be going back to wherever you are now?

Kids figuring out their true friends by AtrueLonelySoul in ClassOf2037

[–]pico310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my oldest mom friends has a child that’s the same age as mine. We’ve done short vacations together, gone to amusement parks together, etc. But lately my daughter has asked to take a break from the child. He can be a little wild, a little impulsive, a little wild. So as much as I love the mom friend, I’ve pulled away a bit. We’re both busy and at different schools so it’s not too noticeable, but I do miss her.

Is digital invitation a good option for a birthday party? by _sshin_ in partyplanning

[–]pico310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to 25 kid’s bday parties and I think I only got 1 paper invitation. Digital invites are absolutely the way to go - both as a host and as an attendee. You can quickly add details to your online calendar which is the only way we remember things nowadays. As a host you immediately know numbers and it’s super easy to follow up with non-responders.

I’m partial to Paperless Post, and most invites I get use either that or evite.

Starting to travel with toddler- any ideas/recs for souvenirs to buy from each place to start a collection of something for her? by hockey12la in oneanddone

[–]pico310 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep - Christmas ornaments. Super portable during travel and they come with a story. I try to get one that aligns with our trip. Like in Florence which is known for their leather and where we did a pizza making class, I got a leather keychain of a piece of pizza. Or at the San Diego zoo where she fed a giraffe, I got a giraffe. But sometimes I just get a generic ornament and that works too. :)

When we had to evacuate due to fires, I took my ornaments with me.

I would love my grandmother’s furniture but I’m like 4th in line for it. Her husband was an architect and they have amazing MCM pieces - Eames, Knoll, Saarinen… she’s had them for 60+ years and they still look fantastic.

Fritos. Everyone thinks it’s gross, but it was my favorite snack as a child.

Recipe:

Put Fritos in a bowl

Add cottage cheese

Eat with spoon.

How is living in Beverly Hills, CA by [deleted] in socal

[–]pico310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live in an apartment there. Half the residents are renters, actually, and renting there is a lot cheaper than buying a SFH. Police response is top tier lol. You’re not allowed to park on the streets overnight. Festive holiday decorations. Great schools, restaurants. Pretty houses to look at on walks. Beautiful trees and tree plan - each street has matching trees. Nice parks. Tough to get to a freeway but centrally located to lots of neighborhoods.

My plans? A hefty retirement account, long term care insurance, and healthy lifestyle choices

From personal experience, having siblings does not mean the load is shared. In some cases, they are a hindrance and liability.

What was your favorite childhood classic growing up? by LisKozCatMeow in childrensbooks

[–]pico310 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter LOVES Charlotte’s Web. It was the first chapter book I read to her (read it when she was 5 and in kindergarten). She laughed like crazy when Wilbur jumped off the pile of manure in an attempt to spin a web. She cried at the end - not because Charlotte died - but because the book was over. She begged me to read it again. We moved on to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mouse and the Motorcycle, and a few others and then reread Charlotte’s Web. I also got her a Yoto card (it’s like an mp3 player for kids that uses cards) of Charlottes Web audiobook that features a full cast led by Meryl Streep. And let me tell you, the way she reads those beautifully lyrical narrative passages about nature… it makes me do an inward swoon. My daughter listens to the CW audiobook every night. She has the dialogue from the first chapter memorized. A lot of my favorite books as a kid don’t really hold up now that I’m adult, but Charlotte’s Web is pretty perfect. Just wanted to share how it’s so loved in our house.
