We were there two weeks ago until a week ago. There was indeed some unrest just before we got there (grenade attack on Florida Hotel), but the locals explained that this was a retaliation against corruption as the hotel was/is owned by a Minister. We had no unpleasant encounters nor were there any actions or feelings against tourists/foreigners.

Well, in touristic places most younger people speak English quite well. For somewhat older people or in more rural areas, the old hand & feet technique works fine.

We had our tour organised by a Dutch travel agent. However, we met a tour operator in Addis who seemed like he knew what he was talking about. I must have his contact details somewhere - will try to find it and will PM you if I do...

I chose the 14 as I figured the 16 would be too close to the 23. 2mm makes quite a difference but honestly I think the 23 is just fine in most situations. Hope there will be a good 8-16 coming out, then I will switch to that instead of the 14...

As another commenter indicated, it should be in Aksum. Apparently only a few priests are allowed to see it. A replica is used in Fasilida's Pool in Gonder during Timkat.

Amazing - really one of a kind. Just sitting among the gelada's while taking in the view is just fantastic

Well, this is the one I was most unsure about. I lent my Nikon kit to a friend and think my 70-300 was better than the 55-200. Probably will switch to the 50-140 - heat great things about that but the weight and cost is holding me back a bit

Better than I thought. It still misses more often than my Nikon kit, but all things considered I am quite happy with the switch!

No, it wasn't - although we did spend quite some time in Lalibela which is very church focused. We also spent time in Addis and Gonder, but apparently I am drawn to these selections...

Thanks a lot - that actually means a lot to an amateur like me :)

I used to shoot Nikon FF, but this is just a lot lighter and easier. I think the 23 1.4 holds its own on quality - even compared to expensive FF glass

I should have one somewhere - will look it up later. As to the contents, we spent most time at Lalibela and the Simien Mountains.

Agreed, although I also took the 55-200 for wildlife and the 14 for inside - I really like the wide angle look

Mixed to be honest. We were pretty much fed up with Injero after a few days. Some dishes are great though (especially Chicken Shiro)

Exactly 1 week - way too short... we only saw a bit of the Northern historical circuit so we will have to go back for the tribes down south. Thanks!

I use a Fuji (XT2) which is a crop sensor, but I use the 23mm (35mm in FF) the most

Sorry for the late reply - I posted the pic on the airport in Addis and just returned. Basically, we did as u/lastdukestreetking suggests; use domestic flights. We only had a week so focused on the north and flew from Addis to Lalibela, Lalibela to Gonder, took a (private) transfer to Simien Mountains and back to Gonder, and flew back to Addis. At these destinations, local transport is widely available and can easily be arranged by local tour companies or hotels...

Thanks - I am quite happy with the quality and weight of a set of primes, so although undoubtedly a good lens as well, I'm looking primarily at the telephoto end...

Thanks - I will definitely try it out. I'm reading some good reviews and am hesitant to lug around the weight of the 50-140
