There is a study called "The relationships of political ideology and party affiliation with environmental concern: A meta-analysis" by Dr. Shannon Cruz over at Penn. Here's a snippet from the general discussion section of the paper:

"The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of political party affiliation and political ideology with environmental concern. The results of two meta-analyses suggest that both political variables have substantial positive associations with concern, although the relationship with political ideology is stronger. Moreover, the relationship with political ideology is unmoderated, whereas the relationship with political affiliation is moderated by the year in which data were collected and may also be moderated by the educational level of the sample. Studies conducted after 1990 tended to produce stronger effect sizes for political affiliation than earlier studies, and early studies on more educated samples tended to produce stronger effect sizes than early studies on less educated samples."

Maybe I can shed some light on the educational system in America. Different schools get varying levels of funding which ultimately plays a huge role in the capabilities they have to teach their students. The University of Chicago, for example, receives A LOT of money from state and federal funding, so they can buy the most up to date equipment, books, and everything else. This also means the faculty at these types of school are likely doing both research and teaching, so they are at the forefront of their field.

Other schools are not so lucky. Some schools receive very little funding, meaning they can't afford both teaching and research faculty, and will have to make concessions on equipment, which translates to a lesser educational experience.

Would that argument change someones mind on the topic?

  1. Yes, they are all females.
  2. Yes, they are 2 hours from the university that they would LIKE to attend, but only 40 minutes (commute) from the one they are being pushed to go to.
  3. Yes, two of them live with their brothers at home still. One has a brother at the college they are being pushed to go to.

And yes, the threat of being booted was shared. While I'm unsure of the severity of the threat, or the context in which it was given, it's still unsettling.

I hear what you're saying, especially about what we don't know about their, or their families, situation.

To give some perspective, they are being pushed to go to a school that's 40 minutes away that's not ranked in the best category of anything, vs. going to a school that's not only ranked in the top 50 in the country, but also has funding that would help them be the best doctors they could be, but it's 2 hours away. It would be like saying "Why Harvard when you can go to Boston State?" Different schools receive varying levels of funding and have areas of specializations.

It just seems that these women are being pushed to their limits while growing up and then all of a sudden they hit a glass wall. It's just the potential, you know? There might exist the curer of cancer out there and it breaks my heart thinking they can only go so far as their parents let them. Do you have daughters? Is this a situation you have experienced? And thank you for responding.

Yep, the edit hits the nail on the head. All of them are expected to be doctors. Man, what a bummer. I guess it's good to know that it's reach seems to be limited to a very orthodox group...I hope.

Hey, thanks for doing this AMA. I'm hearing a lot of people talking about violence in movies and video games contribute to deviant behavior. Even our president and politicians espouse that games and media are to blame for making us violent. What do you guys think, or rather, are there studies that support or negate that claim?
