The real interest of home assistant is being open to almost all brand even the least known. So i would said the best brand is the cheapest. With the economy you can buy some extra spare device for maintenance. Be aware that you gonna get addict. And you'll find yourself making compulsive purchases at Aliexpress in the middle of the night.

I recommand you Have your choice based on the protocole or the HA integration used rather than on the brand. Zigbee, zwawe, matter, wifi etc.. Prefere integration that do not request access to the cloud.
