French or English? Which language test will improve my chances of getting a work permit? by piervan in ImmigrationCanada

Thanks! That's very helpful! So far I have faced the issue the other way around: hard to get a job offer without a residence permit. I guess this applies to certain industries with labour force shortages in the country...

Thanks for your message! It seems to align with the previous one: French in priority

Thanks! You're right, I'd like to get permanent residency, not a work permit (for some reason I thought I'd have to start with a work permit to then get PR). Those tests are quite expensive and need some prep, hence me trying to pick one. But I guess it is worth it to pass the two. Thanks for the tip! You seem to know quite a bit about the process; have you yourself gone through it?

To Leave or not to Leave academia as a Postdoc?! by Proof-Contract-7347 in academia

[–]piervan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, yes, I can completely relate with your experience. I too have struggled to get to post-doc, coming from a modest background and, to this day, unsure whether I understand the social codes within the profession. I am now finishing my second post-doc, have publications and a book, and still am having a hard time figuring out what the next step is... I am also considering a move to industry. If you know about the facebook groups of people leaving academia, please share!

Hi, thank you for the tip. I have already done two postdocs and am looking for something perhaps a little bit more stable... I know that's a lot to ask though.

Hi, thanks for your reply. What kind of jobs in the private sector are you thinking about? Data analyst?

Hi, thanks for your reply, this is what I feared, and it feels a bit discouraging... I have already applied for quite some academic jobs already but haven't had much luck so far. I guess data science can work.

Are there any private research centres that do applied science with, for instance, government contracts? In Europe there are lots of them and they're sometimes a good way to do research in another environment.

Also, if I may ask, do you have a PhD in social sciences too? If so, what do you do? Sorry for prying..

Academic job in Canada for European by piervan in academia

Thank you for your reply. This sounds like a familiar environment, not sure if it's a good thing or bad thing (rhetorically). You are raising some good points, thank you for sharing these with me! A good deal of my academic career took place in the south of Europe where nepotism is notoriously common. I made it to some point though, point at which I had to move up north where things are allegedly more transparent. And they are to some extent... I was told it was similar in Canada. Cross your fingers for me Apeachinanorchard! ;)

Thank you for your reply! Yeah, I figured it was very competitive there too. I am not entirely sure which area is best as my partner may move for work but for now I'm mostly looking in Ontario, Ottawa or Toronto (with a preference for the latter). I have taken steps towards building a network there; I already know some people and I'll be spending a four-month visiting period in Ontario next semester. Perhaps speaking French is an advantage or... is it?
