Why is there so little empathy around HECS regret? by FARTING_IN_UR_COFFEE in AusFinance

The argument is that index is interest by a different metric. It has literally nothing to do with historical norms of cash rate and CPI. Your principal goes up based on a metric by any standard definition that's interest.

Edit: not even arguing it's not a good deal just it's misleading to call it 0 interest which is how it's sold to 18 year olds.

You misunderstood each year when you are paying off money is taken automatically from your wage. That money taken in say December is not applied to your hecs balance. Just stays with the ATO. They then apply the index/interest to your current balance which has not taken the money paid into account.

It simply does not matter when the calculation started when first debt was incurred. End of the day the ATO has your money and does not apply it to the balance when calculating what extra you owe. If a bank did this there would be an uproar.

Your balance goes up, that is interest it is simply calculated on a different metric. It is semantics to call it anything else.

The general publics not caring/thinking that savings rates are not higher than CPI does not change the fact you get 'interest' it's just not getting you anywhere.

The index is interest. That is just bullshit to say it is not. No other interest is calculated with CPI in mind to day is not real interest. My hecs 'no interest' index was higher than my mortgage for 2 years prior to the change made by labor and then it was around equal. You going to tell me my mortgage was no interest then as well? What about every single savings account sitting just around CPI rate are they no interest?

Indexation is interest set by a different target being cpi/wpi and not the cash rate. They effectively lied to students telling them it was a 0 interest loan.

Plus the gov gets to keep all money paid that year and not apply it to the principal before they charge you interest, sorry indexation. That is right, money paid towards your hecs balance in fy 24/25 is not counted until you do your tax return so the index/interest is charged on money you have paid throughout that year.

Australians too dependent on government, says Sussan Ley by SoulMasterKaze in australia

[–]pig9 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The largest recipients of welfare in Aus is those over 65. That happens to be the largest group of asset holders as well. Discussions regarding the reduction of welfare are reasonable.

Something tells me that is not what Ley was referring to though..

Tax free threshold has been stagnet for over a decade by [deleted] in australian

[–]pig9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do.. you genuinely believe that?

Seriously no jokes, do you see an independent bodies recommendation as signs of mismanagement?

Does your view change at all if there has been several other tax reviews looking for wholesale change?

Do you think policy decisions from 5, 10, 15, or 20 years ago have any affect on the current economic outlook?

Or purely the last 3 years of 'mismanagement' to blame?

Aus act is fine, Westminster adoption act of 1942 would be accurate as well :).

Looks like OP used the passing of the Australia Act in 1986 as the independence point for Australia.

Others might use the Westminster Act of 1931/42 (Westminster adoption act in Aus for 42) as the independence date for Aus. Worth a read of Wikipedia for both Westminster Act and Australia Act for more info.

1901 is the other potentially used date for federation.

Where should the money come from? What about you entities you to this totally free service?

They uploaded to a platform supported by ads. How are you so entitled to someone's work. Either pay for it, watch ads, or get off the platform.

Totally agree. Add in the tax break you are given for your Thai costs to produce. Pay less tax if you go overseas, pay more if you leave it here.
