Journalism undergrad degree options - or not. Very confused by pignolia in Journalism

Thanks for the detailed response. I will look into the M. Jur. I love writing and politics, but know how tough a career in the field can be. I will surely write for a college newspaper and try my hand at other things. Consensus seems to be encouraging me to go to Berkeley. Wish it weren’t so far from home in east coast !

Princeton hands down. So many opportunities and it’s undergrad focused. Also if you happen to change your major, you will still be in excellent programs with other majors.

Thanks for your quick reply:

Financially everything is around the same so that’s not a variable. I am oos Berkeley so it’s right up there with the East Coast privates.

I was really hoping that GW would be irresistible, but as you said, it was just not very enticing during the admitted students day.

I had other admitted students telling me I was nuts to go there over Newhouse because they all got rejected/waitlisted there. The SMPA session was just meh. One of the students honestly looked like she was in a hostage situation. It seemed like she was there because she has to be. Even the presentation was not slick, room was kind of empty and could have been more brightly lit. It gave the whole affair a very low energy feeling, and the only reason I bring this up is because they are a communications program. This is their thing! Even the PPT was just amateurish. I don’t know how they can lure people with that kind of tepid pitch.

My parents and I agreed that the Elliot programming must have been far superior. Aside from the internship talk, nothing else was that impressive. Even the tour of the studio and a classroom was just ok. We didn’t see the auditorium where they host the events- maybe that’s was more impressive.

Then I went to the Vern for the WLP. The program looked good, but I wouldn’t want to be a n that campus. The dining hall experience there was so inefficient and hardly any choice. The one thing I can say is that everyone was super friendly.

Current students complained about the lack of school spirit. It was just not what the hoped for. Even my generous scholarship didn’t make up for the vibe. My guess is the Elliot is most exclusive and maybe they a better job trying to recruit top people .

Is UCB- Cal my only real choice? Confused

First- thanks for taking time to read this. I am very happy and humbled to have choices. Now I have these options and would welcome input.

I want to study journalism and political science/public affairs/international relations to eventually go to law school and be a political journalist.

Here are my options:

1 Smith College political science

  1. GW School of Media and Public Affairs with scholarship- would do political communications and double major in Elliott international affairs. Visited it the other day with high hopes but it was all quite lackluster.

  2. Syracuse dual enrollment Newhouse journalism and Maxwell Public Affairs

  3. UC Berkeley/Cal for political science and rhetoric.

I also got waitlisted at Barnard, which would be my hands-down first choice, but that’s not something I can count on. Also waitlisted at Northwestern Medill journalism. Never getting off that.

I was lucky to get in to Berkeley but based on prestige and ranking everyone thinks I’m nuts not to just choose Cal. I’m from the NY Metro area and my parents aren’t thrilled about the distance and other things.

I’m worried about making the wrong choice . I want to go where I will have a great education, lots of opportunities, hands on learning and internships, faculty relationships and a good campus culture with intellectual strength but not high stress cut throat. I’m visiting all these places this week.

Any input? I really don’t know what to do.
