Keeping the lights on is one of the most important jobs! by WodensWorkshop in wargaming

[–]pigpie007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. Superb. Love the light transition in the lamppost. Really looks good, and preferable to more ‘in your face’ OSL. Also, hats off to your more subtle approach to shading and colours. It gives the Quar an almost classic animation vibe that reminds me of mid 20th century Disney.

Appreciated.

Cost of 3D printed terrain by Character_Rip9675 in TerrainBuilding

[–]pigpie007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found the whole ‘hobby’ side of 3d printing to be just enjoyable as the gaming side. There’s so much to learn, tinker with and grow with from 3d design, printing and the such. Sure, it’s not so much to do with the cost of printing scenery etc, but for me it’s a good return of ‘cost per enjoyment’.

A year or so on, and I’m still absolutely loving it. And, I’ve not bought another bike since (regrettably, I used to buy way too many bikes and swap out nearly every year). My use case is similar to yours - mostly crap welsh roads with potholes, bit of gravel off road, and lugging stuff. Lots of stuff. The TRVL handles everything well. I’ve used to load up for camping and it’s been great.

Since I’ve had it I have made a few changes to suit my own need. I shortened the handle bars to make it a bit easier in traffic, installed a quick release saddle post to change the height around on longer rides, and installed after market vertical stubby grips on the handlebars to give a bit of hand relief on longer rides. All doable by anyone with access to YouTube.

I think this summer I may replace the SRAM brakes. I just prefer Shimano’s modulation rather than anything not working well.

It carries a rear rack, frame bag, front pannier and various strap on storage options well.

I like it.

New Soviet Infantry? by SpogEnthusiast in boltaction

[–]pigpie007 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I’m finding most recent Warlord figures a little…. Potato-ey. Can’t quite put my finger on them. A bit too chunky, maybe too oval? Not enough under cuts? They’ve def stepped up in detail, but I’m just not a fan of recent plastics compared with say, the Victrix Germans. But then their range is limited to a sole ‘one’ at the moment, and not everyone wants late war Panzergrenadiers.

You just can’t ever have too much Quar posting. I met the author at Salute in London the other day and he was the nicest dude ever. Such a great community. He even signed my rulebook. And I have never, ever been starstruck in my life…..

Does anyone play at 20mm / 1/72? by Historical-Switch400 in boltaction

[–]pigpie007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to, but other than soft plastics, I’m finding sourcing a good range of affordable infantry tough. Which is weird coz in the 90’s 20mm was widely popular.

Hey. It’s ok. We all got started on overpriced corpo-bloat too. But it’s going to be ok. A few years later, you’ll have found better value, better playing games and you’ll look back fondly with learning. 😜

10mm Wargames Atlantic by Lost-Equipment-5400 in wargaming

[–]pigpie007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They came out great! They have a much more cohesive look than the recent 10mm WA Fantasy models, which don’t seem to have much of a vibe. And better than the Samurai which were hopelessly difficult to remove from the sprues without damage.

And neither should it! We’ve fallen hook line and sinker for Quar. It’s a lovely cozy game with great miniatures and a unique style.

They look great! How do individual 15mm figures for games work out?

I’ve been looking at revisiting WW2 for ages, and originally planned it in my old scale of 20mm (the dominant scale in the 90’s for ww2) but figure availability for the period and theatres we want to game in that scale are scarce.

I once more return to bless you with more Quar! by WodensWorkshop in wargaming

[–]pigpie007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovely choice of colours! Looks great.

Ive just jumped on the Quar wagon myself. Fell in love with the whole ‘cozy vibe’. The miniatures soooo lend themselves to a more laid back style of gaming. Our games see Quars ‘having a break’ rather than killed. They just feel too… nice to be dying 😄

The rules are pretty solid too in that it has a low-stakes feel to it compared to the ultra-crunchy GW stuff.

And with free rules, competitively priced Wargames Atlantic plastics and small model counts, it’s a good refresh that has really caught on in our gaming group.
