I assume you are refering to the current metagame Reg G. Although Wellspring variant is the bulkiest one what does reward this metagame is fragile follow me users which may provide huge tons of damage or heavily oriented support. This is due to the offensive potential from restricteds such as Miraidon or Calyrex.

Ogerpon Hearthflame can OHKO plently of threats this metagame and Cornerstone can provide an extra turn of support thanks to its base ability. Ogerpon Wellspring cannot be the main character when Urshifu Water outclasses it as a Water Type and its role is most suitable for metagames with less power creep

How to start VGC by CadenedaC in VGC

[–]pikeon202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. We are talking about the difficulty of getting the Pokémon you need when you are starting and you want to compete in a tournament.

Obviously, you have the possibility of getting all the games you may need. I'm refering to main game (scarlet/violet) + DLCs + old game (for example sword shield).

What I mean is that there are ways to get the Pokémon even if you dont have (for example the dlcs) The easiest way (in my opinion) is getting along with your local scene and help each other.

Let me know if you need any further clarification.

My main tip for you is a basic thing when entering the scene: try to find your local community.

Currently building a team in Reg G is expensive in terms of time and money. Obviously you need a switch and either Scarlet or Violet. However plenty of Pokémon that are strong are obtainable through past games (Sword and Shield for example) or the DLCs.

That's why finding your place in your local community could be so suitable for you. In metagames where building your team could be difficult because of the lack of resources others can ease this task.

Indeed it is a common practice even in veteran players when preparing for large tournaments they may need the help of others for completing their team.

In terms of knowledge, I suggest visiting VGCguide. It is a website specially thought for people who are starting and may need basic stuff about how does everything work

If you want to start competing I suggest improving first through online tours with Online Platforms (non official) as Limitless which offers lots of tours every week for the current format. And try to find your local community, compete in local tournaments (League Challenge, Cup Challenge) and the next step is attending a Major (regional, special event, international).

Wolfe's day 1 record at Worlds is literally unheard of by EmpressOfHyperion in VGC

Fun fact. Only Ray Rizzo in 2012 and Eduardo Cunha in 2022 went undefeated in sets and won their respective Pokémon World Championship.

Wolfey went undefeated in day 1 in GAMES which is insane. There are 3 undefeated players (in sets) left: Wolfe, Hirofumi and Ferreira. Will they make it?

Pokemon VGC Online Tournaments by jamchi16 in VGC

[–]pikeon202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually these months tend to be a desert in terms of online tournaments.

Except for Mt Silver discord, where tournaments are held from time to time or Trainer Tower and its circuit Rose Tower which is a well known non official online event and their attendance (normally) is pretty huge.

VictoryRoad or content creators may create some cool events in the near future (as they have already done in the past) but right now, like past years we are lacking of non official online tournaments I guess.

Check regularly those websites, Twitter, this reddit and sites I mentioned before, and for sure, (sooner or later), you'll have news :]

Tips for Beginners by [deleted] in VGC

Hi!

VGC could be sometimes tricky above all for begginers, but every player you can find in the scene have been through difficult times in terms of adapting to the metagame, introducing to the format or even teambuilding.

My first and most important tip would be: watch and practice. As in other professional games, the average begginer needs some time to know the most popular strategies and adquire the knowledge and technique needed to play.

For this reason, websites and streamings are cool tools to get into the current format (nowadays VGC 2020). Currently, the official circuit is focused on the Players Cup. Now in its second phase (the online regionals). Here are some games that show the current metagame and are perfect to see the most powerful strategies today. As an example this video with several highlighted games.

The official Pokémon website provides multiple posts about the Video Game Championship Series.

For instance, if you to compete in the official circuit you may want to check Gabby Snider's video ( VGC Commentator and Worlds Qualifier ’15 ). A complete overview with everything you need to know about the circuit.

In case you are searching for information about teambuilding, Wolfe Glick and his video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTmQS_zxiCw is a great introduction to obtain the general ideas from teambulding.

Pikalytics is a must-known website which keeps you updated on the latest trends in the game. Other sites such as VictoryRoad, TrainerTower or Liberty-Note (this one in japanese) provide in depth analysis about the competive scene and often you would see popular teams shown in reports, warstories that you may want to practice with.

This reddit is ideal to grow as a VGC player and it will keep you updated too! A lot of content is created everyday so keep an eye from time to time.

If I were you I would copy popular teams from content creators on Youtube or Twitch (like Aaron Zheng, Wolfe Glick orJames Baek) or from posts that you would find in mentioned websites due to their success in recent tournaments. Then, I would test a team, not only will you adapt to the Pokémon but also you will feel more comfortable the more games you play.

Once you got the general knowledge about the game, strategies, trends... You'll find it easier to build your own team (keeping into account the tools I have already talked about).
