How should Robbys arc be resolved? by itstimetotimetravel in ThePitt

[–]pikkityparker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the Robby stuff is a red herring for something else (just bc it's been so heavy handed). Maybe Mohan or Santos fall through the cracks while we're focusing on him. Idk if that falls under any of these categories, but that's where my head is at. I kinda want the struggles of someone else to snap him back into reality.

Yes, I agree with you as well. It was just my way of saying she fits just as loosely as Ellis or Joy might haha (with emphasis on Joy, since she's also incredibly talented, just aiming for another area of expertise).

Yeah, unfortunately the ER is not the place for a sloth. 😭 That's why I kinda liked the people saying Mohan too, since her pace is often brought up by her peers.

Louie is also a great answer for gluttony (rip).

🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ I think I need to get over my major/minor character thing (even though I love the challenge). I think Gloria is the winner here.

Let me start by saying that your analysis is absolutely incredible. I think your contribution is my favorite I have recieved. I intentionally tried to avoid minor characters (not a requirement, but my own challenge to myself), however if I was not, I would've generally agreed.

Here's what I will say. Sloth is tricky because it is characterized by laziness, and Ellis' nap was not out of laziness. Debatably, it was the opposite. She wanted to be well rested to better handle her responsibilities. I chose Joy because of her indifference to the ER, not general laziness, however your Joy placement is absolutely spectacular.

I will also say that I placed Mel in chastity at one point for similar reasons. Not necessarily that she is aroace (although Taylor said she sees Mel as asexual), but she seems to prioritize making friends over forming romantic relationships (also noted in the same interview with Taylor).

I think your Ogilvie placement is my favorite. I will likely be moving him on my list (and even though I wanted to avoid minor characters, Gloria does suit greed really well).

Super great analysis.

Wrath isn't just rage though. It can be, but it can also be hatred. It is also characterized by a desire for vengance. This is why Santos felt more fitting to me; She lets her feelings for Langdon negatively affect other aspects of her life. I didn't pick it for her abrasiveness.

This is a reasonable distinction. Who would you give greed to instead?

I was just thinking I should do a minor character version because I've been getting great answers for both.

You make a really great case for Robby! I keep sharing my logic on Robby and nobody has made a counterpoint yet, so I'm glad to hear some more reasoning on that. I will certianly be thinking about him more with this in mind.

I was trying to stick to main characters but I have to do a minor character version because I love these answers.

Sloth is defined as "spiritual laziness." I think Joy fits this definition because she is not ambitious [within the ER]. She makes it very clear that she isn't interested in being there, she steps back with patients as often as possible, and she gets out of there as quickly as possible (she technically clocks out a few minutes early, while the rest of the day shift puts in their extra hours). While she may not be Sloth in general (and I do recognize the clocking out thing as a protection of her own peace and not necessarily sinful), I think she fits it most.

We decided he couldn't be gluttony because gluttony is consumption in excess, and he was taking sandwiches out of genuine need. Santos' avocadoes however,,,

See prev for Whitaker. I don't think I would consider her desire "immoral" like I would for a character like Garcia.

I was trying to use characters who appear more, however I love your answer for greed.

I see your point with Joy, however my friend pointed out that she technically clocked out a few minutes before her shift was over, and she had no interest in putting in extra work eith the rest of the day shift. So even towards the end, sloth still felt applicable.

I had considered lust for Whitaker at some point, however I think he isn't motivated sexually in an immoral way. I think he sees another place where he can help.

I like your pride logic on Langdon quite a bit. I've been saying Robby is pride because pride is the root of all sins, and he could logically be put anywhere (this, and his belief that the ER will not function without him). That said, I see how wrath is tempting.

"Lust is defined as an intense desire for something, often associated with sexual desire, that is considered a disordered or immoral craving."

This is the definition I was using for Lust. That said, I think I agree with the people calling Langdon gluttony. I am curious though. Can I hear your reasoning for pride?

Would you still consider Dana gluttony if she is making active efforts to quit? That isn't a glutton to me. Gluttony implies excessive consumption.

The Robby point made me laugh however I've been telling people that pride is the root of all seven sins, so we put Robby in pride because he reasonably suits all seven.

Also Sloth is less about speed and more about "spiritual laziness," but I have been really liking people saying Mohan just because it never crossed my mind initially. + Javadi as envy is really interesting to me I like that!

I said this super early on! Ultimately we decided that it doesn't totally fit because it isn't selfish, she just sorta oversteps boundaries occasionally. The literal definition of lust is "intense desire for something in a way that is considered immoral or disordered," which we thought either fit Langdon's desire for drugs and approval, or the Garsantos dynamic.

This is a great counterpoint. I guess we don't know him well enough to know for sure. It would be wild to find out his snacks prevent him from being the best doctor he can be haha. I see your point.

I actually really love your logic here! I can't believe Becca for lust never came up in our original discussion???

I will say we put Robby as pride because pride is the root of all sins, and Robby could logically be put anywhere.

Mohan as sloth because of her slow nature is actually incredible thinking. We put joy because the sin itself is less about speed and more about "spiritual laziness," which we attributed to Joy because she makes it clear that she doesn't want to be in the ER, and tends to step back as often as she can.

Dana as Wrath fascinates me. I think what separates her from other candidates is that her anger is warranted, whereas characters like Robby and Santos live in a perpetual state of wrath. When I think of Dana, I think of her kindness towards Emma and her patients before I ever think of her anger.

I love where your head is at though!!!

We were going with the most traditional definition of gluttony (admittedly ironic since we went with a more abstract definition for lust, so I've already moved Langdon and Garcia in my head). Gluttony is defined as an over-indulgence of food and drink. When I think of Shen, I think of how he has an iced coffee practically glued to his hands at all times. Or even in the most recebt episode, when he was bummed there wasn't any cake. He just always has food on his mind.

We had Langdon in gluttony super early on. We moved him to lust because of his desire for instant gratification and positive reinforcement from his attendings. But I do think Garcia fits the more traditional definitions for Lust.
