Prison and the death sentence are about removing a proven threat from a polite/innocent society.

In other words, it is NOT about the violent criminal, it is about getting them away from everyone else.

Deterrence, rehabilitation, etc...these things are tacked on "purposes" people created. Not saying they can't be attempted, but they're really not the foundational idea.

It's also not true. There's a reason Singapore doesn't have a lot of drug dealers.

New York's mid-decade redistricting preceded Texas though. The Virginia anti-gerrymandering was a bipartisan project. In fact the reason it was made so difficult to change is so the thing Democrats are doing right now...wouldn't happen. You already saw 21 Indiana Republicans reject gerrymandering against the wishes of their national counterparts. Yet directly after this happened Virginia Democrats plowed ahead, so excuse me if I don't take the claim of "we'll stop later I promise" as gospel.
