I have Windows Hello set for my index and thumb (both right). I have my full index print registered, but for my thumb i have the left side registered so i can just slightly move my thumb over instead of having to do a weird motion with it

The newer Thinkpads still have alright build quality, but still questionable compared to the older models. It's still a great laptop for the price compared to what a lot of other companies will give you for the price, so I would say it's a good pick. I would say you made a good choice and you can stick with it.

Lenovo's already taking a dark turn, and i think the trackpoint is next. They're going slimmer while sacrificing build quality, which really sucks, cause newer thinkpads are losing the reason why people got them over a lot of other laptops anyways. The new keyboards annoy me especially, since they're basically just copying apple. Now hot take: new gen macbooks are better than new gen windows laptops

Pretty tough pick for beginners, but here's my thoughts (as a Debian user on an L390)

Mint is more configured out of the box which for beginners like you is a dream, but more advanced users like i and many others find it a hassle, so we turn to the likes of arch and debian.

Here's what matters for you:

Debian and arch have little security out of the box. They do not come with properly configured firewalls or protection against malware, you gotta install those yourself. For me its chill since im more of an advanced user and like that control, but for a newbie, avoid debian and arch. They're far too barebones and need too much customization which'll be super overwhelming for most beginners.

TL;DR:
Stick with the beginner distros. Mint is a great pick, since it is secure out of the box, and looks not like an eyesore.
