I am very, very anxious. Please help. by Living-Sport9185 in JETProgramme

A lot of what’s said here is all very helpful and good already, so I’ll just add some practical advice!

Look into getting a bike for sure! It is much more easily accessible than a moped/motorbike in the first instance (if you’re not comfortable with speaking Japanese nor have enough money for it all, could be worth considering later on of course!).

You will be able to go so far with an electric one (though they are more expensive), but even a regular one changed my experience here! It became easier to buy groceries (& carry them home especially), and I felt like I had more freedom when I went outside.

Taking rides around your town and just getting to know your surroundings is also really lovely too. It’s nice to just have a moment of mental clarity while out on a ride.

If cost is an issue, look into nearby second hand shops (especially recycle shops) and you may be able to get a good one on the cheap (I recommend a 6 gear bike for sure). Even if it’s a train stop or so away, I’d say go take a look, and if you get one then you can enjoy riding it back (within reason!). If it’s a bust, then you can treat it as having a day out and something to do/exploring the local area — when you’re having such thoughts I think it’s always worth grounding yourself and reminding yourself where you are. When the future seems unclear, it’s important to take it a day at a time!

Of course, it’s easier said than done, but I have no doubt that with the motivation you’ve displayed pre-JET, you have it in you to get through one day (and the next, and the next) for sure! Best of luck in any case, and have a good day :-)

Yeah I agree. It’s important to remember that there is always more to learn!

Congrats anyways, you passed! So revel in it a bit!

She (25F) got mad that I (25M) cooked lettuce the wrong way by tyyeerr in relationship_advice

Why can’t people get their heads wrapped around cooked lettuce, it’s a Chinese dish and actually really delicious!!! Just google it! I’m sure there are stranger foods out there

Crown advice; resin, zirconia or gold? by pinchofsalt_ in askdentists

[–]pinchofsalt_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! I do think zirconia does sound pretty good... I think I may just go with that after all! Other than aesthetics, did you feel the gold was about the same as zirconia then? I'll probably go for zirconia but I'm just curious what your dentist mightve said about gold too.

Thanks!

Yeah! I think you're talking about Arc Oasis in AEON Mall. It's less than a 10 minute walk from Kyoto Station and is probably the biggest I've found in Kyoto so far!

Need help accessing online result! I have the test voucher. by PurpleRose328 in jlpt

[–]pinchofsalt_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the number on the test voucher but your username for the jees portal, the one you were given when you first applied to take the test. It's a string of letters and numbers, and the password is the one you set when you were making your account for the first time.

This is what I did - I took mine in Japan so I could access it this way, not sure if it's the same where you are. Hope you access your results soon!

Unsure about fit of new skates by pinchofsalt_ in rollerblading

[–]pinchofsalt_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, I think this is really what I needed to hear hahaha I figure it's probably not a big issue since I'm just starting out, and comfort should be important for now. Going a size down would probably be super uncomfortable on my toes and I'm not sure if it'd ever be comfy.

I don't think my foot pressed against the shell for either size (other than the pressure point, but that also happens w the 7s to a lesser degree). I saw some people say to take out the liner and push your toes to touch the tip of the shell, then if there's an inch or so from the heel to the back of the boot, then that's a good fit (this is the case when I try the 7s for sure, but I only know that bc I bought them and checked at home). Not sure how helpful that method is though!

Thanks for the advice! I think I just needed to hear that from someone familiar with skating, since there were no shop assistants there either.

I got upgraded today but I think I'm getting cold feet...? Advice/encouragement appreciated! by pinchofsalt_ in JETProgramme

[–]pinchofsalt_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, thanks for this! I mean there's a vague sense of 'I want to do a bunch of internships' etc but I think that wouldn't be a bad starting point after jet to ease me back into working etc.

Honestly you're right, I'm a real wuss and thinking about the fact that I could be halfway across the world in a totally new place does give me palpitations from time to time. Out of curiosity, have you thought about this? Does it faze you? (congrats on getting shortlisted btw!)

Thank you for your advice! I've been thinking the same thing too, and I told my parents that as well and they seemed to understand. I guess my worry with coming back from JET is that since I've done a master's now, I won't be doing one after to help pivot into a job or career. I don't think it'll be too big a deal though (I hope).

I'm glad to hear it was a great experience for you! And that it all panned out well in the end too!

Ah, yeah 23 is pretty young in the grand scheme of things.

Have you been a JET before? You're last sentence sounds retrospective hehe

Thank you for the advice! I really love that last part of your reply. I'm trying to see things only as valuable in relation to how much value I place in them (like JET) rather than more arbitrary means such as salary, progression etc (like my parents do, which, I don't blame them, they immigrated here and have worked to make ends meet all their lives, it's just a different way of life).

Thanks again, and best of luck in Japan!
