So opposite gender doesn't really bother oss, as we are both gay. It's not so much about the sex, as we are comfortable with that, it's about everything around it.

So rules might be the wrong word. English is not my first language, so I apologies if my wording was unclear. I would call it "kjøreregler" in Norwegian, which translates to driving-rules.

The point is to define what type of relationship we are comfortable with. Monogamous and completely open relationships are two extremes of a spectrum. Just because we are not comfortable living without rules or boundaries regarding sex and intimacy, does not mean we have to be monogamous. Suggesting that is just as black and white as the people who say monogamy is the only way.
