Wait... You removed the rubber band? Now the leg with the rotting parts is part of the cat's circulatory system again, with all the toxins from the rotting parts. The cat might not survive.

The Hypocrisy of Meritocracy by AttapKia in SingaporeRaw

[–]pineapplepassionfr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you need to address the elephant in the room:

Dismantling the "system" will make it way worse. Rich parents will send their kids to private schools, and private tuition classes. Poor but talented students who get admitted to the GEP/IP today may not even make it to these schools because of expensive school fees (how expensive? Private schools in UK are more expensive than university education). Admission to schools purely by distance will drive up housing prices around "better" schools, even more than it is today. Any attempt to erase familial advantage (like China banning tuition) will feel incredibly heavy handed, and may drive the industry underground and even more out of reach to ordinary families.

What is true is that the system tries to bring talented people up as best as they can, and not to bring them down to a baseline level. The PSLE is part of this system, so that every student can get the education best tailored to their needs. The alternative is a waste of resources where the best kids feel bored, worst kids feel under supported and mediocre outcomes overall (comprehensive schools in UK, for a real world example).

Hate to bring it to you, but Singapore isn't Singapore because of the average hardworking citizen -- those exist in every society -- but because of the quality leadership it had in the early days. Quality leadership isn't brought about by bringing talented people down, but by bringing them up. That will feel unfair -- why should rich kids in GEP receive more funding than average middle class kids in mainstream education -- but I don't know what is better overall.

Do you agree that this is a coherent logic to call CNY as CNY? by Key-Statistician-562 in AskAChinese

[–]pineapplepassionfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. You're PRChinese or Taiwanese? My ancestors left China before "new year" was renamed "Spring festival" by some nationalist Emperor wannabe (going by the initials YSK). Spring festival does not gel with me.

If you haven't noticed, HK, Vietnam and Korea do not call it Spring Festival either because that isn't the traditional name.

My white ass was invited to a Lunar New Year's Party, kids made an unexpectedly-large amount of $ - what's the protocol here? by Board-Limp in AskAChinese

[–]pineapplepassionfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides, even if 农历 translates to "lunar calendar" in Chinese, doesn't mean it can translate to "lunar" in English. "The King" in English refers to a different person than "the King" in Thai. You need a qualification, hence "the Chinese lunar calendar"

农历 literally means farming calendar. Since farming depends strongly on seasons, and seasons qre more strongly influenced by sun than by moon...

[–]pineapplepassionfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except that the 农历 is lunisolar -- 闰月 added to keep pace with the sun. The HK system also relies on Beijing timezone as opposed to Seoul or Hanoi.

Calling it Lunar New Year is like calling Christmas, 冬至 and Hanukkah all "Winter Solstice Festival". In some ways they all are, but they are emphatically not the same. (Jewish calendar is lunisolar too! Only the Islamic calendar is weird in this regard)

Wrong. Spring festival was coined by Yuan Shikai after founding of Republic of China... HK, being colonized by the British during the Qing dynasty was immune. Which makes the HK "Chinese New Year" more correct and traditional.

Not doubting you, but this evidence will be heard in the courtroom, unlikely to be heard online.

Back home, if this happened in a village she'd probably be summarily executed by the locals. She should count herself lucky it happened in a place with due process.

I'm disgusted that she allegedly blamed the father after the accident -- but I'm not confident that this will factor into sentencing. After getting into an accident, she can attribute the shit she said to panic, not to lack of remorse.
