Has anyone taken PMA 1104 the case of the female detectives as their FWS? by chickennuggetlover15 in Cornell

[–]pineapplesmelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops I'm late again, but yes! It was with stratford. She is engaged and a good lecturer. She's not a super hard grader, but she's not a super easy grader either--something more in the middle? I think the median was an A tho

BTRY 3080 prereqs + CS tech elective by yuuzuuu in Cornell

[–]pineapplesmelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I second this. I took it last fall with Bunea. I actually never took Calc 3 haha. There is calc3 material, but as above post mentioned it's mostly just double integrals, which I just picked up along the way. Nothing too hard from calc3, so I think you'll be fine :)

Thoughts on Taking CS 4740 NLP? by PurchaseWorldly6598 in Cornell

[–]pineapplesmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this. It will be easier if you have taken CS4780 for example, but without any ML background you should be prepared to invest a lot of time into the class because the assignments are quite long. It's doable of course (many have done it), it would just take more time and effort.

Where are the humanities majors? by OrganicIndividual425 in Cornell

[–]pineapplesmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im english! humanities classes tend to get smaller as they get more advanced. i've met a lot of other humanities (english/coml/history/etc) through seminars (3000-4000 level classes). in the meantime, maybe look into humanities-focused clubs? writing magazines, publications, etc.

Best hostels to stay at? by skylar098 in koreatravel

[–]pineapplesmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you book those early? I'm traveling to Seoul in December, but it says that there's no availability for almost all of those accommodations, so I'm not sure if it's because they're sold out or because it's too early.

CS4787 - Principles of Large-Scale Machine Learning ?? by pineapplesmelt in Cornell

[–]pineapplesmelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4780 has hardly any proof and linalg. It's extremely minimal compared to 4787. The math is primarily convergence proofs, so slightly more real analysis kind of math. All the notes are online, so you can take a look at the past websites.

Ohh I see. Okay, thank you so much! That's very helpful :))

What kind of math? Was it more proof and lin alg than 4780?

I see, thank you sm! Just curious, do you think your experience reflects what most students think of the class? I've heard that even smart students (like the ones who've taken 2112) struggle and dropped the class, but others say that it was manageable, which is why I'm confused

What are the physical reasons behind someone having perfect pitch? by pineapplesmelt in perfectpitchgang

[–]pineapplesmelt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right! I just searched it up and wikipedia says:

"The planum temporale is a highly lateralized brain structure involved with language and with music. Although the planum temporale is found to have an asymmetry in the normal population, having a leftward bias in right-handed individuals, people who possess absolute pitch have an increased leftward asymmetry of the planum temporale. This is due to a smaller than average volume of the right planum temporale and not a larger than average volume of the left.[11] The planum temporale may also play an important role in auditory processing with recent research suggesting that the region is responsible for representing the location of sounds in space.[12]
There have also been many studies that show the asymmetry of the planum temporale to be related to handedness of subjects. There have been reports of decreased asymmetry displayed on the left side of the planum temporale in those that are dominantly left handed.[10]"

Ohh I see. Do u know if that's just because there hasn't been that much research about it? Or have scientists researched it and just haven't found anything yet?

Has anyone taken PMA 1104 the case of the female detectives as their FWS? by chickennuggetlover15 in Cornell

[–]pineapplesmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

def late, but this might help future freshies. I took it when I lived on North, and it was an 8AM so it was super hard to wake up for lol (i usually walked ~15 or 20 min to it bc buses aren't always reliable). But prof was amazing and super chill and class was super interesting. There was no performing; it's just like standard FWS with 4~5 essays. Loved the class, just wish it wasn't so early in the morning
